Work Sucks

Sorry, nuttin' funny to write about tonight. I'm kinda depressed.

I took off work Thursday 'cause my sister and her husband drove down from South Carolina to show off their brand new BMW Z4. So, I went into work this morning (Friday). My friend Brian is in town and we usually meet in the cafeteria for coffee. Unfortunately, the cafteria was closed.

The cafeteria has gotten continuously worse over the last few years. All they have in the mornings now is coffee, bagels, and muffins. All they have for lunch is soup and box lunches. It's only a matter of time and they'll shut down completely.

The building I work in has four floors, but TCIDNN has cut so many people that we're gonna try to move everyone on to two floors and give the other two floors back to the landlord to rent out to other companies. Good luck!

I get to price out what it will take to move all of our hardware from the 4th floor to the 1st floor. We're in the midst of another reorganization.

At TCIDNN we take pride in our ability to reorganize.

We are splitting our current I/T structure into two parts: one to service one division the other to service another division. Of course this will desynergize our I/T support and lead to duplication of resources, but who cares? Must be a new paradigm that no one told me about. Since my manager has no spine, we are the people who will have to move, even tho' it will cost one hell of a lot of money.

But I digress.

On my way to the cafeteria Brian intercepted me and told me the cafeteria was closed, so we had to drink coffee from a vending machine. It was then he told me the latest bad news: six more people got laid off.

I knew it was coming. Two weeks ago one of the high muckymucks at TCIDNN sent out an e-mail that the first half sucked and the prospects for the second half didn't look any better. That told me there were gonna be more layoffs. Every six months for the last two-and-a-half years, just like clockwork, we've had layoffs. It is just so depressing. Why don't they just shut down the fucking business? Or, why don't they lay off a few managers?

My department escaped unscathed (I think). I'll find out on Monday.

We are in the middle of another reorganization and the people laid off had just changed divisions.

Welcome to your new division. You're fired! Now get the fuck out of here!

Just think. With all the money we are gonna blow on what this reorganization is gonna cost, we could have saved a couple of jobs.

I had known and worked with four of these people for the last twelve years. At least two of them can retire and will get a nice severance package. I'm not sure about the other four.

Days like this are just so depressing. I think we're done with The Audit. This being the day before a three day weekend many people had taken off and those who didn't left early.

It felt just like a morgue. I even got to talk to two of the corpses.

For the first time in my career, I'm actually looking forward to retiring.

I wonder if I took a crap on my manager's desk if he would make me retire?

It's tempting.

Sorry to hear about the problems at your workplace. Sounds like the management there all have their heads up their asses. Obviously they don't give a crap about morale. That sucks. Like you said, by the time they "reorganize", they will have spent much more money than they would have spent if they kept the people that they laid off. Nobody wants to work at a company where they don't know if they'll have a job more than a few months. Low morale can make a company go belly up. I hope things get better for you at your workplace.

When in doubt just DO IT!!! Retire, that is! Worked for me!

As to the Blue Funks: We all get them. Go with the flow and outlast 'em just for pure meanness!
(that worked for me too!!)

If you haven't seen "Office Space", it might cheer you up. You could so totally relate, I'm sure.

My organization just spent several months laying people off, then 2.4 million dollars hiring a consulting company to come in, audit our processes and tell us we're doing just great. That 2.4 mill could have paid a lot of salaries.

It's craziness.

I can relate to that. Ugh - stuff happens.

I'm convinced you work at a Georgian branch of the same cursed company where my husband slaves away...
Dawn is right--low morale can kill a company faster than nearly anything else. I hope things start improving for you and your co-workers!

Be careful what you ask for, you may get it...

(Speaking from experience...)

Jim - If I do get the axe, at least I get full retirement and, if the pattern holds, six months pay to boot. I still enjoy my work, it's my job that sucks. Fortunately for my health I no longer work 60 hour weeks. Hell, I no longer work 40 hour weeks.

And to the rest of you, when I retire, I will let everyone know what company TCIDNN is. Until then, y'all have to keep on guessing.
