A Young Sailor

That's me at 21 or 22 aboard the USS Iredell County, LST-839

Hello Captain? Turn this ship around and take us to Yokosuka Japan.

I remember those days -
uniforms ironed the wrong way -
long weekends bartending and fixin fence
good friends and great times -
those are the memories

Ahhhhh, so young! So Fresh!

I have somewhat exactly the same pic from my Marine Corps days. I was in the USMC at 17, killing folks in Nam @ 18, and out by 20. Threw a half-pint of Jack Daniels into the showcase behind a Chicago bar that would not serve a Veteran when I returned. They called the cops, I ran.

Was so screwed up in Viet Nam that I had to re-enlist in USAF a year later. 35+ years later, I'm a college professor.

Your picture brings back the fonder memories.

Ya had to say 'over', right?

My Navy son just finished his 4-year hitch on an FFG at 22.

Thanks to his Mother's prayers, USS Curts (FFG-38) was always going the opposite way of world-events.

Thanks to VoIP, I have a pic-capture that is strikingly-like yours that originated in Brisbane, Australia.

Thanks to you ... for firing dead brain-cells!

"Over"

Yokosuka Japan???I was homeported for 3 years in Yokosuka Japan. How about turn this sucker around and go back to Subic Bay or Pattaya Beach? ;-) damn hippies!

Hell yeah! Catch the red-line jeepney out to the barrio and party all night long.

Yokosuka was much cleaner than Subic. I also thought that Japanese women were prettier than Filipinos. And up until 1969 you couldn't leave Olongapo City. But Subic was cheaper.
