In March (I think) the landlord of where I worked had a somewhat similar situation. He had dug an 10'-deep trench to lay 8" water pipes and dug it to a width that would fit between the tracks.
On a Sunday, it had rained a good deal and the following Monday morning he was driving along, straddling the trench, when the ground to his right gave way and the excavator fell into the trench with the left track still above ground on the leftmost of the trench.
The operator (Mr. Landlord) tried pushing the machine out with the arm but the hydraulic line burst under the strain. Then they tried pulling it out with a mchine like this by hooking a 3/4"-or-so thick chain to it--that broke. Finally, they used the front-loader to 'massage' the ground into a shape to make a ramp that the excavator could back itself out.
It may seem boring on 'paper' but there was much hilarity at the time.
