Dammit! It's only been a day and I really miss comments! I'm exploring options to remedy the situation. In the meantime, long time reader Dan sent me an email with what he was planning to put in comments. There are ten points. Here they are with my comments.
1) I was a Quantico Marine at the time that Kerry was throwing medals over the storm-fence; I was daytime 'riot control' and was a major party-fellow after dark. I personally bought $45 worth of medals & ribbons at the Quantico PX to bring back up to DC. I was 20 years old and already back from 13 months in Viet Nam.
The fact that Kerry was ashamed enough of his medals that he threw them over the fence, or whatever he did with them totally disqualifies his Viet Nam service. In a similar vein to what I said to a commenter earlier this week, how fucking dare he use his Viet Nam service as a qualification for the presidency since he stabbed his "band of brothers" in the back when he returned and gave false testimony to the Senate. Max Cleland, John McCain and all the dudes traveling around the country in his entourage should be ashamed of themselves! After what he did after the war, John Fonda Kerry has no right to claim war hero status!
2) On a given Saturday afternoon in Quang Ngai Province, over a Sunday morning, 2 Viet Cong nurses and a male escort attempted to take a shortcut behind our outposts and along the edges of the CP group. They were caught, shot, and before dying, I personally saw a Marine use a 'pop flare' on one of the nurses. Other Marines kicked his ass and he was court-martialed for the offense.
No matter what the rest of the world thinks, we are the good guys. We don't put up with shit like this. I like to think that Abu Ghraib was white trash gone bad. They will be punished.
3) I think everyone has the right to own a weapon & I think they need to respect that right & that weapon. I have seen a civilian close friend wounded in the neck by another civilian 'playing' with a gun. Weapons are a serious extension of the Will of the one wielding it. It is NOT 'power' but does demand 2-way respect.
I see nothing wrong with that. I totally agree.
4) Abortion, while personally repugnant, is the responsibility of the ones who are directly involved -and no other. I would punch the face of the one who would wear a tee-shirt proudly-proclaiming that they have had an abortion. You can have an abortion, terminating a life before it reaches wondrous-promise, but you cannot spit in my face and claim that it is merely raining.
I have stated before that I am morally opposed to abortion but would not outlaw it. I took a lot of grief for that. Maybe I should be happy that comments are off. My solution to preventing abortion is preventing the main cause of abortion: pregnancy. I think health insurance should cover birth control. I think sex education should be taught in the schools.
5) One cannot spend more than one makes and hope to be free of being in economic bondage.
A truism.
6) Service to others -cheerfully rendered- will never have any long-term negative consequence. Manipulation of others for one's own gratification will & always has ended badly.
This brings to mind all of the failed social policies of the Dimocrat Party.
7) When suddenly hearing unexpected hoof-beats, think horses first, ... rather than zebras.
Uh...OK.
8) "Kill them before they kill you" implies a total lack of any faith in anything whatsoever.
Nope! That is a tenet of warfare. You want to kill them before they kill you.
No one ever won a war by dying for his country...
you win wars by making the other dumb SOB die for his country!!"
--- George S. Patton Jr.
9) To use the materials of the unborn to extend the lives of those who can see the end ahead is much akin to eating your own seed-corn; it gives you a day at the expense of our unexpected blessings ahead. Thanks for sharing.
Umbilical and adult stem cells are readily available. Also, believe it or not, the market place usually goes where the money is and they seem to think that adult and umbilical stem cells are a more viable option. Here's a link you may want to check out.
10) Strive, ceaselessly, perhaps even mindlessly, to do 'the next right thing' and your immediate path ahead will always be clear.
Yet another truism.
Thanks Dan

Posted by: Deathknyte on August 12, 2004 12:44 AMI have to say I disagree with offering "cheerful service." If you're always willing to give people something for free, they'll take advantage of you mercilessly.

Posted by: pennywit on August 12, 2004 09:00 AMWho said anything about 'free'? I should have stated something to that effect, I suppose. What I was trying to say is that even if I'm the dog-catcher, I should be able to be cheerful about some aspect of the job; who wants a surly dog-catcher?
Also, the point about horses & zebras is better known as "Ockham's Razor" (there are various spellings). In essence, when confronted with an unexpected problem or issue, don't go for the most arcane solution first. As an example, if gas prices at the pump today are a penny higher than yesterday, the 'Razor' says don't *first* think that it was a plot cooked up three or even 30 years ago.
And ADULT stem cells is certainly the way to go. Thanks for the link!
"kill them ..." is certainly warranted as viable a war-strategy or tenet of warfare, but is a poor world-view or daily mindset in all other situations (in my opinion). If a person from the Middle East moves in next door, I'm gonna adopt a policy of investigation first (see Ockham's razor).
Lastly, "do the next right thing' simply means trying to find the positive in any & all things (rather than why things are not perfect).
