The root for Islam is "S-L-M" and translated means roughly "Submission to God", however there is some debate on the exact meaning of 'submission' or whether it belongs there. I wouldn't blame their "stupid religion" on the current state of affairs in the Middle East, although strong stable governments haven't been their strong suit. I'd say alot of the blame is the leftovers from Imperialism by France and Great Britain, who took advantage of the weak Ottoman empire and systematically fleeced the region, and drew arbitrary (straight line) borders that took no heed to ethnic groups or religions.
