Here is how Germany's Der Spiegel views North America.

Here is the map that Kim du Toit would like to see. I'm glad he reposted it as I went looking for it a while back. I've now got a copy saved.

I hope you notice that it doesn't matter if Michael Moore lives in his real home in New York or his fictional home in Michigan he'll still be in the People's Soviet of Eastern America.
i know the first map is malicious, but there is something in it that resonates with how I feel as a Canadian in regards to southern and south-western, and north-western, and south-east....most of the U.S.!! I know I'm not the only one who shudders in fear of "Jesusland"....
Posted by: canucktuk on November 8, 2004 03:25 PMShouldn't it be "The People's Socialist Republic of Eastern America"? "Soviet" refers specifically to the Soviet Union.
And what's the fear in all things socialist, anyhow? Would anyone deny that some things/places are better off having socialist bends to them? When the government steps in to break up monopolies (Ma Bell, Microsoft, etc.), isn't this a good thing? It's done to redistribute the money and control, for those having too much money and control destroys competition, and competition is the foundation of capitalism. So, my question is, isn't our democracy *already* socialist in some sense? We don't have a pure democracy, or pure capitalism. And, if you see this as truth, do you hate it?
Posted by: Jimmy on November 8, 2004 04:04 PMCanada just wishes it was important. As does Europe.
Must suck to be so insignicant.
Posted by: Reiggin on November 8, 2004 05:46 PMSigh. Why do so many still think socialism/communism is somehow cool? Failure, failure, failure, miserable living conditions, torture, repression are the historically proven results. I mean, after Hitler lost, those who were attracted to Nazism in other countries kind of quit and went away....I've always wanted to ask those who say America is such a horrible country- why does the rest of the world want to come here then? You never hear about people fighting to get into China, Cuba or the old Soviet Union, do you?

You bopped the nail right on the head, the redistrubition of wealth I've worked hard to get what I've got, and so have my parents. I would donate things to charity, but I don't want government taking it from me. Government involvement means bullshit to me personlly, the DMV is bad enough why would I want the Doctors office or anything else to be the like that? Call me a selfish bitch, but personally I've got my own life to worry about, I don't want the government taking my money and giving it to someone that for most purposes could earn their own.
Competiton is the basis of capitalism, but honestly most of the time competition happens regardless of monopolies nowadays. Ask Apple Computers, or Sun, or Lenix, or FedEx or UPS or hell Dan Rather. He knows what happens when Americans get angry with a monopolistic system. They rise up and publish the truth on the internet while wearing pajamas! =D
I realize you didn't make the map, but if it weren't for the city of Detroit, Michigan would be a very red state. I demand the border move east! Or else you will have uncivil war on your northcentral border!
