Retirement Week 2

I'm starting to try and settle into a routine. For example, my walking has really declined over the last few years. Part of the reason is I didn't do enough of it. I also didn't exercise as much as I should have and after working all day, I was too tired to do any exercise. To remedy that, I have started going over to Perimeter Mall Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and walking there. As a side benefit, I usually find a spot to sit down about halfway through my walk and watch the babes walk by. I usually try to go around lunch hour so I see all the wimmens from the nearby office complexes.

Today, I did my longest walk of all and was thoroughly beat at the end, not to mention the sweat I worked up.

Also, as a result of my getting weak, I have had a recurring back spasm in my lower back on the right hand side. Besides prescribing some drugs, my primary care physician wrote me a referrel to get some physical therapy at Shepherd Center. I went yesterday and worked with Claire, whom I've worked with before. She agreed with my assessment that the spasm is a result of weakness and stressing a lower back muscle. She showed me some stretching exercises and some other exercises to strengthen my hip muscles. I've decided to join the health club at Shepherd so I can work out on their machines and use the pool.

It's only a matter of time before I have to quit walking and use a wheelchair full time but I'm trying to push the inevitable back as far as I can.

This morning I got to do sumpin' I've wanted to do my entire life: wake up on a weekday, hear it raining, and roll over and go back to sleep. The upside of retirement.

Did I say retirement? This week I was called twice by my ex-teamlead to help him fix problems. Both of them were five minute fixes but both took over twenty minutes to talk him through them. One of the bugs I could have sworn I fixed before I left, but I was in a scramble the last few days to get as much done as possible that I guess I didn't get to it. I also got two e-mails on other problems. Yeah, I know, I'm just too nice, but my ex-teamlead did protect me from myself and he kept my ex-CDSMŽ (Clueless Dipshit Manager) from bothering me. Even so, he owes me bigtime and he knows it.

That's a downside of retirement. I don't get to write amusing posts about TCIDNN (The company I Dare Not Name). For example, I left in the middle of a massive processor migration. I happen to be the best person to do I/O configurations which is a major part of the project. I was not offered an incentive to stay (Just the opposite. I was offered a very good monetary incentive to leave. I was made an offer I couldn't refuse.) and I have not been offered a contract to help complete the job. I'm sure this is because my ex-CDSMŽ hates my guts (The feeling is mutual.) and the person who was my manager when I left wasn't completely aware of what I did. For that matter neither was my ex-CDSMŽ.

This project also requires massive network changes. We have not had a decent network person in over 12 months. After our old network guy retired, the new guy who was supposed to replace him knew nothing about TCPIP or SNA. By default I did most of the network stuff. When I left I told my ex-teamlead that he should get the old network guy back on a contract to rework the network after the migration was complete. Everything I did was temporary to support the migration. Management doesn't want to bring the old guy back on a contract because it would be "too expensive". This is another decision by my ex-CDSMŽ.

Even though I no longer work for TCIDNN, maybe I still can get a few posts out it. My ex-CDSMŽ is trying to get the Germans to run their stuff on his hardware. To do that would require a good network guy and a good configuration guy. He has neither. What a booger eatin' moh-ron!

Maybe he can outsource those jobs to India. BWAHAHAHAHA!

Hey, wait a minute Denny. Before you retired you promised you would identify TCIDNN. Now you're out and you're still protecting them. I wasted 24 years of my life at GE and your stories are soooo much like their CDSMs it's eerie.

Hey Bud
Become a sublet vendor like the people that retire from my company do. Then make damn sure the pay is what you want. It won't take long for them to figure out that your high dollar sub fees will cost them less in the long run. We still use their products.
Jack
I know the name but I'm sworn to secrecy...sorry

Well, by golly! Gee whiz! Denny. Your dear sis and bro-in-law just (today) joined a local health club to keep their arthritic joints moving and firm up their flabby asses a bit.

Well...our asses weren't all that bad 'cuz we walk a lot and have even begun running (geriatric style). The problem for us? Our upper bodies are steadily losing muscle and our joints are too stiff. Guess we're on the same page on the issue or restoring lost muscle mass, even if in substantially different places. Sure sounds like a good idea to stave off the wheelchair as long as you can. After all, that damn thing ain't gonna fit in the Z3 too pretty good!

One unheralded benefit of retirement is having a bit more time to take care of oneself.

Jack - I am waiting awhile to announce the name of TCIDNN until I'm completely sure that there will be no returning as a consultant or a contractor.

Getcher ass into shape because scuba diving on the Brac is coming up fast. I hear the Divi is actually much better than it was before the storm since it desperatly needed some fixing and the owners were too damn cheap.
I'm off to the Brac for 2 weeks next month, and taking my new Draeger Dolphin rebreather four hour dives!). I'll try to get the reef sharks all pissed off and ready for you, heh, heh....

Green dragons! thats what we used to call physiotherapists when we were about 6, back at school. I know exctly what yo mean, as I''ve been told i'll be wheelchair bound by the time i'm thirty. I'm doing physio too - stretches, etc - when I remember. bleak prospect, isn't it.

Aww, c'mon Matt! You still have your VOICE, right?

If I look backward, I'm fucked; if I contemplate the prospects ahead, bleak or otherwise, I'm fucked. If, just IF, I can stay in the here-and-now of just-this-day, I find I win just a percentage more than I lose.

I think you can too.

my motto is, we're all screwed, so you might as well enjoy life

and anyway, I have absolutely no intention if stopping walking

as for my voice, that depends on weather my lightwriter isn't bust! lol.

Glad you're into the retirement, it's easy to get complacent so keep up the exercise. Best wishes on the hip muscle exercise, yes it's nice to sleep in when everyone else is hustling off to work.

Denny, enjoy the "wimmens" and keep up the walking.
