Yet Another Reason

Another reason I hate being a cripple:

I have a low battery in one of my smoke detectors and the goddam thing keeps chirping at me. There's no way I can replace the damn thing. Aaarrrggghhhh!

Get one of those light weight aluminum ladders Denny...

And knock the damn thing off the wall.

Another reason to have a gun.

I believe that you can get smoke/Radon/CO detectors hard-wired into your household current. I'm sure that have constantly charged backup batteries. you might want to check into that. I'd imagine that the savings in batteries and the time required to change them (or the potential cost incurred if you DON'T change them and actually have a fire) would be worth the expense of getting the doodads installed...

Broom. Swing. Problem solved.

I have them hard wired they still chirp at you because of the backup battery ... Worst yet burn something on the stove they all go off

Download a music file and program the smoke alarm to play Lynyrd Skynyrd rather than that annoying blare. Also, if you had your smoke alarm tied into a security system that phones the fire department, then a red truck with five guys would come and turn it off for you. Sincerely, I know that's really difficult and I'm sorry for your situation.

I just knew that someone was gonna suggest a gun. The problem with that is it would blow a hole in the ceiling. I was gonna ask my cleaning lady to do it, but she's short and I don't have a tall ladder. When my sister and her husband come down at the end of February I'll have them change all the batteries, unless I can get my friend Cindy to do it tomorrow. And yeah, I have had them go off from sumpin' burning in the oven.

See, you are a victim! (ha)

Can you have the detector(s) placed in a spot easier to reach? I know they're usually on the ceiling because the smoke rises and all, but what if yours were placed on a wall instead?

Or, they make retractable poles to use for changing light bulbs, which I have for hard to reach lights. Maybe that'll work on this too.

When our apartment's smoke alarm needs attention, Vikki has me position my power chair under it, and she climbs up ro attend to the infernal device. It helps, having tall friends :)

BTW, ours routinely goes off when we cook. Anything that gets fried means the alarm goes off. It also manages to ignore things that catch fire in the microwave. Useless piece of crap.

Have a tall girl in a short skirt chack all the batteries.

I recommend a nine-iron. Just swing through it.

If Denny's seated he'll need at least a 3-iron. Hell, it worked for Sam Sheppard.

Just do what my husband did. Beat it w/a broomhandle.

1)Have a friend hard wire a pair of leads down the wall to a battery holder. If really creative, could go through the drywall and out at the bottom where its convenient.

2) Send me a profile of the cover and I'll fabricate you an extension in a NY minute!

3)Move aboard a boat and have problems only YOU could imagine! It would add another whole dimension to your blogs! Be sure to take pics.

Danny, try Michael adn Cindy. They are only next door. Or listen to teh bird chirping (you will get used to it) until Christmas and Sherry will put it on the "honeydos" list for Ryan.

Denny,

Your local fire dept would be more than happy (in most areas) to come out and assist you with the installation of a battery or a new detector. The FD I work for does this at least once a week always free of charge.

We replace old detectors with new ones that have a 10 year Lithium Ion batteries. For a $10 detector its a nice way to give back to our community that we protect and keep people alive.

If your replacing it yourself, look of one with a buttom that will desenseitize (sp) the detector for a 20 min period or so while you cook. They're not much more expensive, and can save you a lot of headaches.

Hardwired is another way to go, and while good, they still have a battery backup that will go bad. Also US law only requires new battery only detectors to come with the Li Ion batts. So hardwires still come with the 9V from china.

Just thought I'd let you know.
