Our Man Jimmah

It turns out that not only is Jimmah against the United States, he's also against Georgia.

Arlington, Va. --- The military base closing commission on Wednesday dealt South Georgia an economic blow when it voted to recommend keeping open a New England submarine base rather than transferring many of its jobs and vessels to Kings Bay in St. Marys.

Several members of the commission said former President Jimmy Carter, Georgia's best-known submariner, influenced their decision with a letter last week in favor of Submarine Base New London in Groton, Conn.

Way to go Jimmah. Way to stand up for Georgia. Why dontcha move your peanut farm to Connecticut, asshole?

The vote means that Submarine Base Kings Bay in Camden County will not get from New London more than 3,000 jobs, six nuclear attack submarines and the Naval Submarine School that many local residents and officials had expected.

"It would have been a tremendous impact to our businesses and to the economy and we are disappointed," said St. Marys Mayor Deborah Hase. "But we'll keep going on."

Jimmah Carter: the gift that keeps on giving.

Commissioner James Bilbray, a former Nevada congressman, said he was swayed by the letter Carter wrote urging the commission to recommend keeping the New London base open.

Carter stood "against his own state of Georgia, and I think that's very important," Bilbray said.

That's no surprise. He's been standing against his own country for so many years that it was inevitable that he'd stand "against his own state of Georgia".

In addition there were three bases closed in Atlanta. They were Fort McPherson in Atlanta, Fort Gillem in Forest Park, and the Naval Air Station Atlanta in Marietta. The first two bases are in the districts of Cynthia McCommie and John Lewis. They vote against every military spending bill so if they bitch about it they may want to examine their records on the military.

Well, I'm not surprised. But, just to give the man the benefit of the doubt, what were his reasons for promoting the Connecticut locale over his own state?

He thought it was better to have two sub bases on the same coast.

For once he is right, assuming your rationale.
I oppose any base closings in the USA as long as we have any troops stationed permanently on foreign soil. By that I am not refering to ou occupation troops, but rather the ones in Germany and S Korea.
I cannot believe it, having to admit that pEANUT is right. It is the first time in 30 years though, and I guess he is entitled to a little leeway. Still, turning on his own home state is a little low.

He will never top the Panama Canal giveaway. Don't let him near anything you want to keep. Send him to Iran and let him give away their oil fields.

Why are Jimmy Carters thoughts being seriously considered by anyone, anyway??

I hear what you're saying, Jeremy. However, are there any submarine bases left along the Gulf coast to at least cover that area?. If so, then yes, Jimmah may have a point. Naval resources located along the east and west coasts are in strategically superior locations because deployment into the Atlantic and Pacific is more efficient. I would nevertheless have to question his judgment to influence a decision that is detrimental to his own local economy. What a jerk, huh?

Maybe it's the beer talking, but I could give a damn about civilians losing their jobs when a base closes. Yes, there are towns and even cities that depend on the revenue that bases and their personnel generate, in addition to peripheral benefits produced when foreign personnel come out to show their flags and train, but I've always felt that the military should take care of its' own. That means that military clerks should do the clerkin' and the maintenance personnel should do the maintenance.

The military has its' own support branch and if that's not good enough, then it's time to rethink the way support personnel are trained. God knows, there are enough Engineers and Electricians who could use a shore posting. Hell, even cleaning could be done by shore posted personnel on a rotation basis. Make it an extra duty like scullery. Who knows, maybe if there was a single chain of command on a base, there wouldn't be a 'confidential source' quoted in the LSM every time some douchebag got pissed off.

That's just one foreigner's opinion, though. Whatever you do, don't get me started on the band....

Paul, Given the ferocity with which we are being treated by Huricanes (which I credit to solar activity not global warming myths, I think having an alternate port on the east coast is a good idea. It would not hurt my feelings to see jobsleaving the blue states, but still having an alternate in case a huricane wreaks havoc is a good idea.

The reason that Peanut is in favor of Submarine Base New London in Groton, Connecticut is that its a blue state. Georgia is a red state. Don't make it complicated. Peanut has no sympathy for his home state when he can support a blue state. This is not rocket science.
