Pierce, one of my French commenters, is in town for the next few months attending classes at Georgia Tech. I'm gonna pick him up at 5:30 and bring him back to GOC Central for a steak dinner. I'll let y'all know how it goes.
Posted by denny at January 7, 2006 02:25 PMI'm gonna have an American Chardonnay with appetizers (smoked salmon on crackers) and the salad. With the main course (filet mignon, baked potato, and corn on the cob) I'm serving a 1998 Gigondas, a delicious Rhone red. He was supposed to bring me some wine, but he forgot it.
Posted by: Denny on January 7, 2006 03:58 PMYou gonna marinade the steaks ?? I like wine in my marinade too.. Garlic, and lemon-pepper and soy sauce.. I use Riunite(Italian) Lambrusco..
Posted by: Wild Bill on January 7, 2006 06:00 PMPierce - Welcome to the States, buddy. I hope you have a pleasant stay here.
Posted by: Mike on January 7, 2006 06:24 PMI guess that froglegs aint in season there, huh ?? Didnt you and Pierce have a rather lengthy discussion on a matter of difference of opinion ?? Aint he the one that wanted to know how come you had so many frog jokes ?? Have you checked to see if the muslims have a fatwah out on you ?? I wonder if he may be on the wiretap watch list ?? Dont let him use the phone or check email while he is there..
Posted by: Wild Bill on January 7, 2006 06:57 PMWelcome to America, Pierce! Hope you enjoy your stay!

Posted by: Denita TwoDragons on January 7, 2006 08:45 PMShowing some good southern hospitality - how sweet. Hope you guys have a nice dinner.
Posted by: Lisa on January 7, 2006 09:51 PMTell Pierce welcome to America, and stay away from my daughter while he's on the Tech campus!
Posted by: marcel on January 7, 2006 10:06 PMThat was sooooo good, the wine was excellent, and the beef was incredible !! The Cognac was more than excellent.
I'll see you soon again Dennis ! You're so nice !
Posted by: Pierce on January 7, 2006 10:33 PMWild Bill -Ya don't marinade filet mignon. Also, Pierce and I always had polite discussions. You are thinking of other French commenters.
Marcel -Fortunately for your daughter, Pierce has a girl friend in France. When she comes over here I will have her and Pierce back for dinner. To describe Pierce, think about a French Addison. He's a very delightful young man.
Posted by: Denny on January 7, 2006 11:02 PMGood for you Denny for growing past your midwestern roots. We all do not think of you as being snooty, I swear.
Posted by: Teresa on January 7, 2006 11:22 PMWelcome to the US Pierce, and remember...it's not cheating if you're in seperate countries.
Just kidding; I hope you enjoy your visit and miss the worst tourist traps.
Posted by: mt on January 7, 2006 11:38 PMWelcome and Howdy Pierce. Enjoy your stay in America, see what you can and when you return home to France please tell them honestly what you saw and experienced, the good and the bad.
Posted by: TomR on January 8, 2006 12:34 AMDenny, you just don't "get it" do you; all your site is good for is that you post daily. No more, no less. YOU have engaged in far more HATE than I have seen posted as responses to yours.
I mean you no ill-will; I thank you for hosting GOC!
You seem to think that such hosting elevates you to some exalted-opinion status that is beyond reproach. Did it ever occur to you that an All-Volunteer Military is another way of saying an All-Volunteer War?
I have all the 'things' that you do and quite a bit more; -does that make my opinions better than yours? If I 'read' you correctly, it DOES!
While I daily read about all of your self-indulgence, I have yet to read about your unsung-heroic acts of daily human-kindness.
I have seen you up close and personal, in the flesh, and you had no idea that I was even there; you were too busy "Holding Court" for me to interject my own bad self.
Yeah, I'm a tad angry with you ...-not for the reasons you might think. I'm 50% VA-disabled and yet I'm out there trying to help; what's YOUR excuse?
I smoke, I drink, I daily go forward with trying to empower the daily-other in my life & encounters; some of the Folk I meet worked for IBM and some of them have broken-backs and more; I cite GOC as a way of dealing with adversity.
YOU simply cannot go on as something you are NOT: let your friends & poster-pals tell you how Wonderful you are! Your own posts betray that!
I understand you from a Service-Man's point-of-view; -"We wish things were different".
NO, Sir! Your's is not so out of the ordinary that YOU get to designate someone as the "Asshole of the Week"! ... unless you host such a site.
Posted by: DanS on January 8, 2006 12:39 AMWhoa. Trolls that can spell and know the rules of grammar and punctuation? This is a high class joint. Think I'll hang around here more often.

I spent Saturday morning reviewing the "Rules" about this site; NO ONE dares tell St.Denny that he may merit a "NO!" from time to time.
I LIKE the Guy!
I'll say, from reading him daily, that he thinks HIS is the only honorable and only holy point-of-view; to the Host goes such privledge!
I think retirement from IBM is affecting his mind; I think that no set-agenda for his any-given day is causing a degeneration.
I have former-students who worked with Denny at IBM and they share with me that he is about average; nothing wrong with that!
One-Arm Mike & paraplegic Dave are STILL working for IBM; TCIDNN is named & mentioned almost daily. Mike & Dave relay to me that IBM is a culture of "we might could be".
Frankly, I could give-a-shit less about their so-called disabilities; they beat the crap out of me almost everyday with KNOWLEDGE on things that keep things going. I have come to rely on them for views that reflect workplace-reality. I am but a humble Teacher.
Somehow, being former USN & IBM confers upon one immutable-ness. It's strange that I never heard about such until perhaps 2 years ago. Yes, I know I exist here only at Denny's pleasure. Can no one tell the King "NO!"?
Posted by: DanS on January 8, 2006 11:45 AMDan - Lay off the meds for a while. You are not making much sense. Of course this is my site and I make the rules. I pay for the bandwidth. I am king. I don't consider what I write hate, unless I'm writing about traitors of which there are many in this country. I would love to see Jane Fonda strung up. I voice my opinions. This is a release for me.
As to what I do good. Am I supposed to document my charitable contributions? That won't happen. I do share my good fortune with others. I always give more than the previous year. Character is what you do when no one is looking. That's why I don't brag about that.
Posted by: Denny on January 8, 2006 01:19 PMPierce, enjoy your stay and...oh this is bad...don't lose your way back home.
Posted by: Paul on January 8, 2006 02:17 PMPeople who have to name their charitable causes are the ones that scare me. As Denny said, character shouldn't be something you have to defend. As for Dan, I tried to make sense of what he wrote but all I could deduce is that perhaps English is his second language.
Very nice of you to host Pierce.
You've definitely created a sense of family here at your site. Even though I have to admit to not reading all of the commentors' blogs regularly (I try to click through when I have time, though), it's still nice to see the same names regularly and get to know each one through their comments and through mentions by Denny himself.
Denny, I'm planning on starting my own blog in the near future (next month, I hope). You've inspired me to do so. Just wanted to thank you for setting an example that I hope to follow.
Posted by: reiggin on January 8, 2006 03:19 PMReiggin - At last! I'll finally have a blog child. Let me know when you start and I'll put you on my blogroll.
As for Dan, he's been commenting here for quite some time. Sometimes he makes sense other times he doesn't. I'm not sure if is too much medication or too little.
Dan - I would really like to know which IBM'ers you know who know me. I really miss many of my coworkers and former students.
Posted by: Denny on January 8, 2006 04:40 PMDanS says:"I LIKE the Guy!" "I have seen you up close and personal, in the flesh, and you had no idea that I was even there." "Yeah, I'm a tad angry with you" "YOU simply cannot go on as something you are NOT"
Freaky. I'm a between-the-lines reader and this reminds me of the quote.."I'm not a stalker. I'm just a romantic with a restraining order."

Michael D. K***** and David E*******. Midtown building, 2001. Both have long-since moved on to RTP in NC. One is married, the other is a Buckhead Buck-Master.
Well, Mr. Burgain seems to be a grateful guest too.. I was worried about the filet not bein marinaded, but looks like all were pleased with the outcome anyway.. Was wonderin if you might post some of the topics you and Pierce discussed and if he would join the discussion, that we might ALL have a better look at what his opinion is on it.. That is, if it doesnt take too much time away from his studies.. Wouldnt want it to interfer with his scholastic indeavers.. Who knows.. Maybe I could interest him in a trip to Texas for some beans, cornbread, and BBQ !! All in the interest of Foreign Relations, of course.. That is, if he brings his sweetie with him !! Acidman will probably try to beat me to it with his damn boiled peanuts tho.. BTW.. How did Pierce like your cats ??

Far as I know, I've never been a stalker except on the deer-hunt; Rest EZ!
Denny and I agree on pretty every subjects.
Thanks to all of you who are welcoming me so nicely !
I have to go, I'm going to an american party !!
See ya.
Posted by: Pierce on January 8, 2006 07:59 PMHey Pierce,
Enjoy your stay in the USA. Enjoy the wine and the company. Georgia Tech...a very good school.
Cheers
Posted by: scaryguy on January 8, 2006 08:39 PMDan - I don't recognize either of their names. Plus, I never ever have been to or worked in the midtown building. I spent all of my time at 3100 Windy Hill in IBM Education throughout its many name changes. I quit teaching in 1998. Maybe they just knew me by reputation or thru Uncle Mikey or Richard.
As to my holding forth, you must have eavesdropped on a blogmeet since that's the only time I hold court. Or maybe you saw me at a Guild tasting.
Posted by: Denny on January 8, 2006 08:44 PMBig Den, I watch the chefs on t.v. they do indeed marinate a filet for a bit of time. I don't go for that cut though, too lean and boring. I go for a thick aged New York Strip on the grill with a bit of sea salt and fresh cracked pepper.
Having Pierce over? Good form, although; Never invite a vampire into your house, it renders you powerless.
