Dinner With Pierce

I had frequent French commenter Pierce over to dinner Saturday night. He's taking classes at Georgia Tech for the next four months. For those of you who don't know, Pierce is not the typical French commenter. On many topics he and I agree. More on that later.

I picked him up at the Tech campus in my Z3 at 5:30. Unfortunately, there was no place to park, so I just stopped in the street and turned on my flashers. Pissed a lot of people off. Anyway, he came out and got in and I gave him a demonstration of Georgia driving which included driving between 85 and 90 on I-85.

Got back to the house and cracked a bottle of a Napa Valley chardonnay and served some smoked salmon with crackers. Then we had a salad. After the salad I grilled the steak.

Note to Wild Bill: You do not marinate filet mignon!

The steaks were the nice thick ones from Fresh Market. I also cooked some corn on the cob on the grill and baked the potatoes in the oven. With the main course I served a 1998 Gigondas from the Rhone Valley.

After dinner it was a nice snifter of Delamain Vesper cognac.

We had an interesting evening discussing politics, socialism and the evolution of the English language.

Pierce and I share a lot of the same political beliefs. He hates the high taxes in France. He's not a big fan of socialism and is alarmed at the direction France is heading. He is extremely intelligent. Yet another person I have met who is smarter than I am. I would describe him as a French version of Addison. He has a logical mind. What would you expect? He is an engineer.

All in all it was a very delightful evening. I got him back to Tech alive and well.

Why? Didn't you think I could get along with a French person? our political views are very close, or is that what you are shaking your head about?

Isn't it Prosper that pisses everyone off? Not Pierce....

All that culture you delved out was probably wasted, cause he's out tonite drinkin Colt 45 and eatin barbeque wiennies and Arkansas cheese with a bunch of AMERICANS !! He's gonna be rurnt now, and his girl will turn up her nose at him and head back to France on the first flight after she sees his underware stickin out above his pants and he has a nose ring.. You better watch him close and not let him get corrupted while he is here..

You mean, no gigondas for me if cross all this ocean ?

If you behave yourself it could happen.

If only i spoke your language fluently, it could be an amazing evening. I would bring not the usual Tokay Pinot gris, but the Tokay "Vendanges tardives" (that means "late vintages"), more rare, with a jar of goose fat liver.
Anyway, it's good to know you can have dinner with a frog without shooting at him. As you said, Pierce is not a traditional french man, but hey, whatever lowers the french bashing...

Sure you do in a bouquet garni.

Denny's guns were in the shop, no just kidding..I'm sure Denny was an excellent host. It sounds like a good party with stimulating conversations. After all, it's really about the exchange of ideas.

Cheers Prosper

Shoe - I don't think he's ready for that!

Scaryguy - He wanted to see my guns so I showed them to him.

Well Pierce

Glad to hear it. Once you are complete with your studies, you and your girlfriend should try to explore a little more of the USA, Colorado, and Central California are very pretty in the March April time frame. Enjoy your stay.

Cheers
