Well lookee here! We got another member of that "culture of corruption" that Nancy Pelosi keeps harping about.
A federal judge scolded former Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell for leading an office riddled with corruption. Then he sentenced him to 30 months in prison.
It's funny, but I read this entire article, and maybe I missed it, but I don't see one mention of the political party that Campbell is a member of. Hint: He's not a Republican.
"As the trial progressed, I was overcome, almost appalled, by the breadth of misconduct in your administration," U.S. District Judge Richard Story told Campbell on Tuesday during the sentencing hearing in federal court. Later, Story looked Campbell in the eye and said, "I am going to send you to prison, and I do not take that lightly. Within my heart I am not sure you have accepted responsibility for what has transpired."
Of course he hasn't. I think he's proud of being the most corrupt mayor in the history of Atlanta. He's just pissed that he got caught.
Campbell remained stoic as the sentence was handed down. The 52-year-old, who served two terms as Atlanta's mayor from 1994 to 2002, was convicted in March on three counts of tax evasion but acquitted on racketeering charges and taking thousands of dollars in bribes.
He got OJ'd by the jury. They didn't convict him for bribery because they got confused about a date. After the trial was over they essentially said if they hadn't been so stupid they would have convicted him for bribery also.
In addition to prison time, Story ordered Campbell to pay almost $63,000 in back taxes and a $6,000 fine and to serve a year on probation following his prison term. Prosecutors contended Campbell had evaded paying taxes on about $200,000 in unreported income.
Hopefully he's still got some money left after paying his high priced lawyers.
Campbell, who did not speak in court, called the sentence an "abomination" as he left the courthouse. He also claimed the judge was trying to undo the jury's verdict. "This is not justice," he said.
He's right. If it were justice, he'd be going to the pokey for a lot longer than 30 months. And what kind of a black politician would Bill Campblee be if he didn't play the race card?
Campbell has frequently called the federal investigation into his dealings "racist," "an inquisition" and a "witch hunt."
Remember my earlier comments about the jury?
Though the jury found Campbell not guilty of corruption, Story didn't, saying he believed Campbell accepted $55,000 in illegal bribes from city subcontractor Dan DeBardelaben. The jurors were confused by different dates given for the DeBardelaben bribe. After the trial, several jurors said they would have convicted Campbell of racketeering if they had known the dates were not contradictory.
Idiots!
The last part of this article was on the same page as a story about how our Congresscritters just gave themselves a $3300 pay raise.
Somehow these just dovetail together. It seems a shame that our elected officials can't steal enough money so they have to keep giving themselves raises. They're now making $168,500 a year with lots of perks and they bitch about overpaid CEO's? At least most of the CEO's are competent.
Posted by denny at June 14, 2006 10:46 PMDenny, you KICK ASS with your insight & incisivness!
Posted by: DanS. on June 15, 2006 01:04 AMGee the congress critters get a $3300.00 pay raise I think with the 21 years I have in the U.S.Army I'll get about $300.00 or $400.00. Gee I might almost might be able to pay my rent for another month. They decide what I wear and how much I make and they get a raise that is right at what I make a month. Wish I could vote for my raise!!
Posted by: Sgt S. Humphrey on June 15, 2006 08:08 AMI don't get too much heartburn from congressional raises. DC is an expensive place to live on top of the requirement to maintain a residence in the home district. That's a mortgage payment at home and rent in DC as well as two of every utility bill. Several actually live in their offices and sleep on a cot or couch for years. Not a big deal for the likes of Kennedy, Kerry and Rockefeller but a tough task for good old John Q. Average who gets elected to Congress.
Posted by: Ric on June 15, 2006 09:23 AMI can only wish that the issue of whether a politician gets a salary increase would be decided by his/her constituents. My humble opinion -- and I may anger some people here -- is that all politicians are lying, cheating, stealing scumbags.
Posted by: GT on June 15, 2006 09:45 AMUh, Ric, I guess you missed that article that said that most congresscritters are millionaires.
Another great post, Denny.
Talk about overpaid. Figure that the members of congress should only be in D.C. about 30 days a year and they're really overpaid. Congress was not supposed to be a full time job. Pay them for 30 days a year at a fair wage compared to civilian industry. They will go home and quit passing thousands of useless unenforcable laws just to con us that they are doing something.
Posted by: Scrapiron on June 15, 2006 10:38 AMI'd like to see the bumbs be forced to live like our military does in base housing. Can you picture someone like Ted Kennedy living in the old "CAPEHART" housing complexes? How much incumbancy would we have with our congresscritters then?
Posted by: gene Hall on June 15, 2006 10:58 AMThe phrase "corrupt politician" is certainly redundant in the case of our congresscritters. The current pack of "theives" are starting to bore me - we need some new "unconvicted felons", IMHO. I read someplace the other day that statesmen are just dead politicians. We definitely need a lot more statesmen.
Posted by: Vulgorilla on June 15, 2006 11:13 AMAdd Bill Campbell to the list of upstanding leaders like Ray Nagin and Marion Barry. When do we get our own Robert Mugabe?
Posted by: Squidley on June 15, 2006 12:11 PMIt is almost automatic for me to look for party affiliation in articles about misbehaving politicians and there is a clear trend. If the crook is a Democrat then that information is NOT germane to the story.
Posted by: LargeBill on June 15, 2006 12:17 PMCampbell has frequently called the federal investigation into his dealings "racist," "an inquisition" and a "witch hunt."See, they did, in a way, state his party affiliation. Calling someone a racist when you have been convicted (or even suspected) of wrongdoing is code-word for "I am a Democrat". Also, unthinking lemming-esque leaps to hyperbole--"inquisition"--are standare fare for a party that has many epigones who call their President 'Hitler'. Posted by: addison on June 15, 2006 12:36 PM
When did Atlanta NOT have a corrupt, thieving mayor? Bill Campbell isn't an anomaly. He's TYPICAL of what Atlanta has had for the past 30 or so years.
Posted by: Acidman on June 15, 2006 12:36 PMAtlanta is in competition with Nawlins. Wish ole Zell Miller could run. That was the last of the good democrats!
Posted by: gene Hall on June 15, 2006 05:12 PMI like Zell, too.
