When Sen. Ted Kennedy was merely just another Democrat bloating on Capitol Hill on behalf of liberal causes, it was perhaps excusable to ignore his deplorable past.


But now that he's become a leading Republican attack dog, positioning himself as Washington's leading arbiter of truth and integrity, the days for such indulgence are now over.


It's time for the GOP to stand up and remind America why this chief spokesman had to abandon his own presidential bid in 1980 - time to say the words "Mary Jo Kopechne" out loud.


As is often the case, Republicans have deluded themselves into thinking that most Americans already know the story of how this "Conscience of the Democratic Party!" left Miss Kopechne behind to die in the waters underneath the Edgartown Bridge in July 1969, after a night of drinking and partying with the young blonde campaign worker. But most Americans under 40 have never heard that story, or details of how Kennedy swam to safety, then tried to get his cousin Joe Garghan to say he was behind the wheel.


Those young voters don't know how Miss Kopechne, trapped inside Kennedy's Oldsmobile, gasped for air until she finally died, while the Democrats' leading Iraq war critic rushed back to his compound to formulate the best alibi he could think of.

Neither does Generation X know how Kennedy was thrown out of Harvard on his ear 15 years earlier -- for paying a fellow student to take his Spanish final. Or why the US Army denied him a commission because he cheated on tests.


As they listen to the Democrats' "Liberal Lion" accuse President Bush of "telling lie after lie after lie" to get America to go to war in Iraq, young voters don't know about that notorious 1991 Easter weekend in Palm Beach when Uncle Teddy rounded up his nephews for a night on the town, an evening that ended with one of them credibly accused of rape.


It's time for Republicans to state unabashedly that they will no longer "go along with the gag" when it comes to Uncle Ted's rants about deception and moral turpitude inside the Bush White House.


And if the Republicans don't, let's do it ourselves by passing this forgotten disgrace around the Internet to wake up memories of what a fraud and fake Teddy really is.


The Democratic Party should be ashamed to have the national disgrace from Massachusetts as their spokesman.

The Dims have no conscience. When the R's get into trouble they resign and/or go to jail. Look at Alcee Hastings in the House. Hell he was impeached for crissakes and now they are trying to put him on the ethics committee or some other bunghole job. Look at the Dims on the judiciary committee. They should all be in jail or at least on the FBI's most wanted list. Leahy got thrown off the Intelligence committee after leaking secrets to the press. Then there is Kennedy the murderer and the list goes on and on.

When I look at Ted Kennedy I see a man who left a woman to die to save his own ass..

I'm old enough to remember the accident. I was a young woman, and I thought Kennedy was lieing and could have saved Mary Jo.

Also, I've not forgotten Kennedy's beautiful ex-wife who became an alcoholic .... I'm sure he drove her to drink!

You are within your rights to dislike or to even distrust our president ...... I certainly have reservations over some of his actions & lack of action in other areas but he is the president , he has faced far more adversity then did Clinton & has at least shown the capacity to lead.

Forgive and forget is a good way to live one's personal life, but a poor way to run your public life. I don't even remember most of the wrongs I have suffered, nor those who perpetrated them, but I know where the child molesters in my community live. A few days after the accident, I forgave the guy who rear-ended me, but it took years for his insurance company to do so. The families of Charles Manson's victims have moved on with their lives as best they can, but he still rots behind bars.

I think it is much more noble not to have fallen in the first place than to have fallen and made a comeback. By "fall," I mean both personal problems--addiction, obesity, etc.--and legal ones--DUI, bribery, and even murder. Besides, immoral people are generally immoral in more than just one aspect of their lives. Why should we not hold them accountable? Teddy Kennedy's early life was rife with personal failings; how those got overlooked can only be due to his extraordinary family connections.

The 18th century North American colonies were not entirely English. Along with the Brits were large numbers of Scots, Irish, and Welsh. The Dutch presence was still strong, as was the German. Scots, Irish, and French were the great adventurers in those days; Englishmen were primarily port and city dwellers and Germans were farmers. The farther inland you got, the fewer English you encountered.

Some sources say that roughly 20% of the 13 original colonies' population was African, and we really can't forget the Amerinds.

Yes, you're right about all those groups. How diverse: Everyone from the British Islands, and a smattering of other Europeans. We got rid of both the Spanish and the French, though some of their people remained.

Regardless of where the people came from, it was English law that formed the basis for American law (yes, I know that some states' laws are not based on English common law, but they are the exception, not the rule). Regardless of private beliefs and practices, it was WASP values that were the public American values: hard work, self-restraint, Protestantism, respect for the law, and more.

The prospect of German becoming the language of the land has been far overplayed: German had no more chance than Ojibwe of becoming the language of the new nation.

African and American Indian cultures had zero impact on the founding of our nation. None. Zilch. Zip.
