Even though I am still messed up from the antibiotics, I forced myself to attend a single malt Scotch tasting. Sorry Elisson it filled up to fast to get you in. And Eric is in Scotland swilling good single malt so I don't have to feel bad about not getting him in. I'm sure he'll be jealous if and when he reads this.
Here's the menu.
Salad (Choice of One):
Caesar Salad
Wedge of Iceberg Lettuce
Entrees (Choice of One):
Ribeye 16oz
New York Strip 12oz
Filet 12oz
Atlantic Salmon 10oz
Seabass 10oz
Served with the 25 and 30 year old Highland Single Malt Scotches)
Sides :
Au Gratin Potatoes, Creamed Spinach, and Asparagus
Desserts (An Assortment of):
McKendrick's Cheesecake
Key Lime Pie
Chocolate Volcano Cake
(Served with Highland Park Single Cask (#691) Single Malt Scotch Whisky distilled in 1983.)
So let's see, we got to taste 12 year old, 15 year old, 18 year old, 25 year old, and 30 year old single malt Scotch. Then we got to taste a single malt Scotch from a single cask distilled in 1983. The best thing of all is this was totally free! Yep! Booze and food totally free! What a deal!
Is it any wonder I forced myself to attend?

So which did you like the best? I'm not a Scotch drinker, but I'd still be interested in knowing which one earned highest honors.
Posted by: Teresa on May 15, 2007 10:36 PMI don't know a thing about Scotch, but the Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail, the 12oz. New York Strip, and the Chocolate Volcano Cake sound like a winning combo to me! Yummm!
Posted by: CharlieDelta on May 15, 2007 10:53 PMTeresa - The 30 year old, followed by the single cask. I'm gonna buy a bottle of the single cask for Eric. I had had that before at my friend Michael's. His store is the only place in the world to buy Scotch from that particular cask. His store bought it all.
CD - For the record I had the crabcakes, Caesar salad, and the filet. The desserts were brought out on big plates for us to share. The chocolate volcano cake was awesome!
Posted by: Denny on May 15, 2007 11:07 PMAw, Denny - don't feel too bad. I'm out of town anyway. I'm in Austin at the Barton Creek Resort, where I just finished pounding down a few tumblers of Macallan. This evening's menu? Glad you asked:
Vodka Tomato Gazpacho with Grilled Lobster Medallions
Romaine Heart Salad with Yellow Tear Drop Tomatoes, Bousin Cheese Toast, and Dijon Walnut Vinaigrette
Pear Sorbet
Beef Tenderloin en Croute with Lobster Tail and Andouille Sausage Ragout
I know. Sucks to be us, don't it?
Posted by: Elisson on May 16, 2007 01:55 AMOh man, okay the food sounds okay, but you got my mouth watering with the scotch you got to try. I am a new follower of the scotch and have come to appreciate the plethora of flavors that come with the different types of scotch. You are one lucky SOB Denny!:-)
Posted by: Jeff on May 16, 2007 06:25 AMI caught a buzz off the wiff of your post, Elisson gave me ideas for dinner! Thanks guys!
Posted by: LisaKay on May 16, 2007 07:37 AMScotch reflection.....
When I was a young, crazy, two fisted drinker..."One in each hand".....I attempted to develop a taste for Scotch....Could not, which was surprising as I swilled down about everything else. Oh well, thats life.
Anyway , sounds like a grand time was had by all & the Menu read as to be superb.
Posted by: dudley1 on May 16, 2007 08:12 AMElisson - Right after I put up this post I went to your site and saw that you were in Austin. BTW, the same people who make Macallan make Highland Park.
Posted by: Denny on May 16, 2007 09:46 AMDenny, can you honestly tell the difference between 18 and 30 year old scotch? Or even between 12 and 18 years?
To me it's all good. Single Malt that is. :-)
Posted by: Jesse on May 16, 2007 04:04 PMJesse - Yep! There was quite a difference. The 12 year old was mixed with other stuff, not saying what so as not to offend the Scotch purist, so there was really no basis of comparison between 12 and 18. There was a difference between the 15 and 18. Trust me, if you had been there, you would have noticed the differences between all of the Scotch we tasted. The 30 year old was really kickass!
Posted by: Denny on May 16, 2007 08:00 PMThere's one I've been meaning to try for awhile called Peat Monster. Being a huge Dalwhinnie fan, I figure I ought to be able to handle it.
If you're really into the scotch thing, you should consider picking up a quaich, Denny. It's the bowl-looking thing you'll find on the boxes that bottles of classic malts come in. You can pick one up on eBay for about fifteen bucks.
Thing is, if you're going to use it, make sure you're not out of scotch. I had to pass mine around full of Brennivin once.
Posted by: Duncan on May 17, 2007 02:44 PMWait till the homeless find out about this free dinner.
Posted by: Catfish on May 17, 2007 04:38 PMsounded great. i've been to the Highland Park distillery and sampled the finest. It's a very nice place to visit. I don't remember them mentioning anything about McClellan owning them. They certainly didn't have any lying about.
Posted by: lg on May 18, 2007 12:36 AM... you certainly know how to make a fella jealous... good God, Denny.....
