Name That Party In Joisey

Yep! It's time, once again, to play Don Surber's wonderful game, Name That Party. Ut's a game the whole family can enjoy. This time, we're going to Joisey which is trying (and succeeding) in passing Louisiana as the most corrupt state in the US. Thanks to Woody for the link.

Atlantic City's former mayor, Bob Levy, admitted Thursday afternoon to lying about his military record to government officials in order to receive almost $25,000 in benefits.

The 60-year-old Levy told U.S. District Judge Jerome B. Simandle that he made false and fraudulent statements and representations concerning his military service during the application process for veteran's benefits to the Veterans Benefits Administration.

At his plea hearing, Levy admitted that in January 2003 he submitted an application that contained false and fraudulent statements in support of his claim for financial benefits. Levy admitted that he falsely claimed that he twice was abandoned during battle by his South Vietnamese troops and left alone in the jungle for several weeks, which caused him to suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, according to U.S. Attorney Chris Christie.

Lying about his military service? Who woul do that? *cough*Flipper*cough*

Levy admitted that he falsely stated that he was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Parachutist's Badge. Furthermore, Levy falsely claimed that he had successfully completed Airborne School and that during the course of his military service successfully parachuted up to 100 times. Levy admitted that he falsely claimed to have injured his shoulder during Airborne School and while participating in military operations. Levy stated that he never completed Airborne School and that he never parachuted from an aircraft during his military service.

"Bob Levy did an awful lot of right things in his life, but he admitted wrong things today," said Ed Jacobs, Levy's attorney.

Levy spoke in a voice barely audible as he answered "yes" and "no" to the judges questions. At one point when asked how he was feeling, Levy responded: "Nervous. Other than that, I'm in good health."

Levy will be sentenced on Feb. 15 at 1:30 p.m. He faces 0 to six months in prison, but supervised release is more likely. He will be expected to repay $24,683 in benefits.

So my question is, <DonSurber>Is this dooshbag a Dimocrat or is he a Dimocrat?</DonSurber>

Holy crap! I'm channeling Erica by using "dooshbag".

Oh come on now Denny. This one is too easy. They never even mention his political party, so by default we already know it.

Posted by: Steve on November 6, 2007 01:26 PM

I'm guessing the reason you are channeling me is because next to the evil dooshbags who are hit & run drivers [God, I HATE those!], steal from old people, and molest children, I think peeps who lie about their military history and falsify documents in order to procure benefits from the Federal Government are the lowest form of life.

Just my opinion, but I think whatever bullshit they make up in papers in order to steal from the tax-paying citizens whose freedoms they once defended now officially disqualifies them from being an American hero any longer.

I hold the highest regard for Veterans, but schmucks who do that are about as useful to me as boogah eatin' moh'ron draft dodgers. See, now I'm channeling you.

Oy, and he's from Jersey? It'll be a rough day there today for the handful of decent, voting, non-dooshbag peeps there, so I'll go easy on them and reserve further comment.

Posted by: Erica on November 6, 2007 01:26 PM

Why would anyone lie about U.S. military service when the DD-214 is so relatively EZ to get hold of? The only reason I can think of is because of that fire in St. Louis at the National Military Records Center a few years ago.

Perhaps the crook thinks that they could claim that the NMRC ate his record?

I'm betting the guy is Dem (without even glancing at the link).

Posted by: DanS. on November 6, 2007 01:32 PM

BUT, I would be wrong:

n 1990 - Begins a 15-year career as the city's head of emergency management after being appointed to the position by lifelong friend and city Mayor Jim Whelan. Also is considered an unofficial top aide to Whelan.

n 2001 - In December, Levy refuses to resign as emergency management coordinator, despite Mayor Lorenzo Langford's request.

n 2004 - Demoted to chief of emergency services by Langford.

n 2004 - A lifelong Republican, Levy switches parties in December.

n 2005 - After former City Council President Craig Callaway's sudden withdrawal from the mayoral race in March, Levy fills the vacancy with hopes of improving ethics and promises "safe, clean streets."

n 2006 - Levy is sworn in as mayor at the start of the new year.

n 2006 - After several members of city council plead guilty to bribery charges, Levy works to distance himself from the corruption, saying, "City Council does not run city government. I am the chief executive officer of this city. I run the city." Levy is not named as a target in the federal investigation.

So, he was (R) at the time he did the crime and then changed to (D) to try and weasel out of it.

heh -can't wait to see how many more like this Surber will find.

Posted by: DanS. on November 6, 2007 01:45 PM

Dan - Surber didn't find this one. This one was from Woody. If the guy were still an R it would have been mentioned in the first paragraph.

Posted by: Denny on November 6, 2007 02:01 PM

"Holy crap! I'm channeling Erica by using "dooshbag"."

And you are even using Jooish spelling...

Posted by: BobG on November 6, 2007 02:25 PM

DanS.
It seems to me that the guy figured out that he was indeed a crook and thus new in his heart that he was a dimocrat. So he just went where he new he would be welcome and have a long political career.

Posted by: chuckintacoma on November 6, 2007 03:44 PM

He knew if he got caught as a republican, he'd be pressured to resign or give up his position. If he were a democrat, he would be exhalted from on high and considered a great leader because he was able to "bullshit his way to the top". Not much unlike the camel jockeys we are now trying to put in their place. A client that has served a few tours told me that in their society, he who lies the most, and gets away with it, has the most success. Successful lying is looked upon as a great gift in their society. So the Dims and the Dimwitted Middle Easterners share a lot of similiar traits.

Posted by: Ray on November 6, 2007 03:55 PM

of coarse "new" is "knew".
Grampa moment.
sorry

Posted by: chuckintacoma on November 6, 2007 04:20 PM

Chuck:

'coarse' we 'new' you meant 'knew'.

Of course we did! Knew it all along.

^;^

Posted by: DanS. on November 6, 2007 04:38 PM

Ray:

"he who lies the most, and gets away with it, has the most success." is not unique to one political party at the expense of the other.

he who lies the most, and gets away with it, has the most success is a true statement for anyone anywhere ... until they get caught.

Besides, lies make Baby Jesus cry.

What is really pathetic is how many veterans fool the VA administration and end up collecting full disability for something that supposdly happened 35-40 years ago. Belonging to the VFW I learned how laywers are hired with the help of the VFW to assist with false claims for a cut. I personnally know two dead beats who won substantially. One guy claimed agent orange from Viet Nam and gets a $2500 check a month. The VA even bought him a new car for him to get around in. In reality he served as a store clerk on a ship and only was on shore for a very short period. Another guy collects $1800 a month for lung cancer. He still smokes at least three packs a day and drinks a bottle of Canadian Mist. How the military causes these problems I can only guess.

gene:

"... deadbeats who won substantially."
If even you put it in terms like that, I think you may be answering your own question.

Isn't $2500.00/mo. rather high for an Agent Orange claim? The car-deal alone says he must be 100% as I understand it. Also, " ...Belonging to the VFW I learned how laywers are hired with the help of the VFW to assist with false claims for a cut.."; why be with VFW then?

Be of good cheer, tho! VA has a reward program for those who help weed out cheats. You might want to look into that.

Lastly, I don't think VA buys in that the Mil is causing these things, but was causative at the time it happened.

It all evens out. The VA screws alot of folks out of benefits who deserve them as well.

Posted by: vetfromhell on November 6, 2007 06:11 PM

vetfrom hell:

I agree with that statement. And I don't like it.

I hope you'll check out this link. The guy knows what he's talking about and he has lots of helpful info.

Bottom line: Keep filing appeals on top of appeals and NEVER file a new claim if the first one is turned down. And document, document, document as best you can.

I once worked full-time for VA Chicago (Westside) back in the late '70's; I worked with Claims Examiners who indicated that a hefty bundle of documents (in date-order, of course) would get better service and speedier-outcome than a Vet standing in front of them with a missing limb. Sad, yes; but true. It's the Guv'mint, after all.

Did you further realize [this just occured to me] that you were also channeling Bou by proclaiming: "Holy Crap!"

Posted by: Erica on November 6, 2007 08:43 PM

Historically speaking, being the mayor of Atlantic City is a launching pad to the slammer.

Just another day in the Jersey political swamp.

Posted by: Jim - PRS on November 6, 2007 08:47 PM

Great, now we have asshole politicians taking away something else from the Vets. It's bad enough when after years of fighting we can't get what we deserve, or what's worse, what was promised us, and yet we have these wonderful politicians (that are already overpaid for what they do) lying in order to steal and make it more difficult.

For over 2 years I've been trying to get VA benefits. I got out of the Army medically and was awarded 10% by the Army. VA's first course of action? Reduce it to 0, then make me fight for 2 years to get the bare minimum allowed by DoD regulations. Another 6 months down the road, and I'm still trying to get my date fixed from release in the VA. People ask why lie to the VA when your DD214 is so readily available? They don't use it, that's why. Mine clearly shows when I got out of the service, yet VA lists me as being 6 months later. If they looked at 1 of them, they might have to look at more, which would mean actually doing some kind of work.

Is it to late to not enlist and get screwed by my own government for doing it?

I had him pegged at "New Jersey". maybe he can share a cell with governor bonesmoker. wait.. I dont think that guy is in jail.

Random:

Check out the link!

http://www.disabledvet.com/

And drill down DEEP when you get there.

As a disabled veteran of both USMC and USAF and having worked for VA in Chicago, I'm here to tell you that there is no offer gonna come from VA! You have to fight for it. Read the earlier response to the vetfromhell post.

VA is hoping you'll shut up and withdraw into yourself & never darken their door. DON'T LET THAT HAPPEN! In the beginning, I had to fight with them for almost 3 years to get it squared-away. Nobody (with the possible-exception of a DAV-Rep) is gonna help you.

Even today, close to 40-years later, they still try to jack me around ... as they do my bud's from WWII, Korea, Lebanon, Panama, GulfWar I and all the rest. "To Care for He who Has Borne the Battle ... His Widow, ... his Orphan" is how Lincoln said he wanted it.

Again I say: VA will help, but only if you FORCE them to. You can do that; you are a Veteran.

Posted by: DanS. on November 6, 2007 10:45 PM

Erica - Actually, I have been using "Holy crap!" longer than Bou has been blogging.

Posted by: Denny on November 6, 2007 11:02 PM

One more thing I think ALL Veteran's should know about how VA goes about "awarding" claims:

Something called "Lifetime Earning Potential" weighs heavily in their calculations.

I won't get into all the details here, but in essence, if you are judged by them as being a HS dropout, alcoholic, prone to petty-crime & unable to hold even a menial job, your claim will be processed quickly and you'll have your check sooner than if you have actual physical trauma.

Your monthly payment will be about $65.00. You will stand in endless lines for days on end, you will have to 'certify' that you are still a bum on an annual basis, but you will get that $65.

Therefore, what you want is something called Vocational Rehabilitation testing. It's a week-long series of tests (once in the morning, once in the afternoon) that seeks to determine where you were before the military and where you COULD have been if you had NOT gone in the military. Cold & calculated, I know, and not a whiff nor scintilla or even a hint of a scent of Patriotism to it, but dem's the facts.

VA hates that this secret gets out from time-to-time because it forces them to see exactly what your Service truly cost you.

Again, they will jack you around with scheduling of your test-days and so forth, but when they come up with a figure of how much they need to invest in you, so that you can be 'made right' & realize your "Lifetime Earning Potential" ... -they scramble to put out a pittance so that YOU can earn a lifetime of tax-paying ability.

I've seen figures of almost a 1-to-100 ratio of return-on-investment from VA. In other words, if they find you 'worthy', they spend a dollar to get 100 dollars of tax back from you over your "Lifetime Earning Potential" life.

Capeche?

Posted by: DanS. on November 6, 2007 11:33 PM

Hey Den!

Maybe you might want to repost the above on November 11 for ALL the veteran's (rather than on November 10 for just the Few, the Proud, The Marines)!

Just a thought!

I'm off to bed; gotta be up & gone by 6AM.

G'night!

I didn't know you were a professor and sally was your student...

What gives, man?

Heh-heh...

Posted by: CharlieDelta on November 7, 2007 02:35 AM

Dan,
You share a lot of wisdom. Some day I will need to seek help from the VA. I ruined my knees from countless miles of Airborne shuffle on hard roads in combat boots.
Right now I just bite my lip and go on, but sooner or later I Will need ot do something about them.

Jeremy:

Do you already have a VA photo ID?

Go to your local VA NOW (and count on spending at least 6 hours there) and simply get that credential at this time.

It will give you good-insight about how the entire process works. It will also usually garner you 10% off on just about anything.

DO IT!
