Race Or Gender?

They had this interesting article in this morning's Atlanta Urinal and Constipation.

The dozen or so Spelman College women had come together in a basement classroom, after hours, to hash over a choice unimaginable just a few generations back.

Fliers posted across campus summed up the thrust of their conversation: "Should you vote for Barack Obama because of your race, or should you vote for Hillary Clinton because you are a woman?"

OK. Let me post this question: Should I vote for Fred Thompson because he's a white man? Hmmmmm. That sounds racist and sexist doesn't it?

Spelman is a black college so no Republicans need apply.

With Democratic primaries quickly approaching, black women throughout Atlanta and across the nation are asking each other that question. They are debating it as they post blogs, meet for political round tables, host fund-raisers and whip out their checkbooks.

Race or gender. The black dude or the white bitch? Issues? We don't need no stinkin' issues. Race or gender. That's all that counts to these women. Oh. And the person has to be a Dimocrat. No black Uncle Toms or evil capitalist women (with the exception of Hillary Clinton who, even though she advocates socialism for everyone else she made sure she got rich. She and Bill are worth millions. And let's not forget the capitalist ploy of parylaying a $1000 investment into cattle futures into $100K. Not bad for a Marxist.) a need apply.

It's an ongoing discussion that, for many black women, stirs visceral emotions as they weigh their racial and gender identity.

Race or gender. Decisions. Decisions. But since these are black women we know that this isn't racist or sexist. That only applies to white males.

At Spelman that evening, Shayna Atkins, 19, cut to the chase, pointedly asking her peers: "Would you feel like a sellout if you didn't vote for Barack?"

"Maybe if it were 1963," shot back Marquise Alston, another 19-year-old who is a Clinton supporter.

Race or gender. I just wonder what would happen in one of these discussions if one of the women said she supported Mitt Ronmey?

The conversation rarely turned to former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, the other top Democratic presidential contender, or to any Republican front-runners.

None of the Republicans are black or female and the only thing these chicks would be concerned about with Edwards would be hair care. Race or gender.

For some black women, U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) embodies a strong leader who, if elected, could open doors for all women, black and white. They admire her intellect and political acumen.

Yeah. She could demonstrate that the only reason she is where she is is because she married a man and used him to get to where she is. Do they really think Hillary would be where she was if she hadn't married Bill? And she allowed him to humiliate her and her daughter in front of the entire world. She parlayed her victimhood into a Senate seat. Yep! That's a lot to admire. I know many women who made it on their own and did not get to where they were because of a man. They accomplished stuff on their own. They are the real strong women, (I'm planning a future post about four of them.) not Hillary, who is a faux feminist.

Desiree Pedescleaux, associate professor of political science at Spelman, said the majority of black women in Atlanta will vote for Obama because of their strong identification with race.

She says some black women may support Clinton because of deep admiration or because they view her as the Democratic candidate most likely to succeed. But on an emotional level, Pedescleaux argues, race will trump gender.

"When an African-American woman walks into a room, what do most people see first?" she asked. "They see race. They see her as black before she is a woman."

See. Race trumps gender.

Now imagine if this article were written about women at a predominately white woman's college and they were deciding their vote on whether the candidate was white or a woman.

*sigh* And they are college students. I don't suppose it occurred to even one of them to vote for the PERSON who most fits their own ideal of how the country should be run. Not the gender, not the race, but the candidate! Sheesh.

I remember when that moronic woman - Carol Mosely Braun - was running for the Senate in IL and all the idiots with a soap box were telling me to vote for her because she was a woman!!! Not just a woman but a black woman!!! She MUST be a good person to have in the Senate - right? ARG!!! Yeah, she lasted for all of one term - even the Dems were ticked with her performance.

How about I vote for the candidate that I think will do the best job? Oh how racist of me!

Teresa (the smart one) - After the election The New Republic (That's when it was actually a decent magazine) did a story about how the LSM covered up all of her scandals (and you probably know how Clintonian they were) because they wanted to have a black woman elected to the Senate. I'd like to say that she was dumb as a stump but in reality she was dumb as Shelia Jackson-Lee who is actually dumber than a stump.

OK, so here is my pea brained thoughtage. Back in the day, was not slick considered the first "black" president? So would that make the former first scank the first black sorta female president if it were elected?
Some times thinking frightens me.

I am going to vote for Fred because he will throw a van full of hippies into the sun each week as his exercise regimen.

Posted by: kerrcarto on November 29, 2007 04:02 PM

Hopefully this staggering conundrum leaves such dimwits perplexed past Election Day. Than when they finally wake up enough brain cells and figure it all out, it's too late to vote.

"When an African-American woman walks into a room, what do most people see first?" she asked.

I see tits first, so I must be a gender kinda guy.

Even though they talk a differant game, the demoncraps have always been shallow, skin deep types.

The professor at the college should have quoted the following. "I have a dream that one day people will be judged by the content of their character not by the color of their skin." and see how many of those "college girls" could identify de quotee.

I guess that viewpoint went right over the professor's haid as well.

(Sorry, I meant head).

How many black schools are there in Atlanta? When I left in 1969 they were about five. I left when the bank on Peachtree NE had the weather on one side and how many people were living in Atlanta on the other side. As I was driving past the sign, it clicked one million, glad I got the fuck out of dodge. Atlanta around five million now.

Well after reading that Ive come away with the thought that the perfect Democrat canidate would be, a blind homeless African-American Indian lesbian with a Hispanic surname ( whos mother came here undocumented) in a wheel chair.

Posted by: Echo5Bravo on November 29, 2007 04:48 PM

That really is fucked up.

Wasn't Shelia Jackson-Lee the one that put forth a bill to force the National Weather Service to give hurricanes more Black-sounding names?

What a maroon!

I wonder if she meant "REALLY" black names, like Shelia?

Posted by: StanW on November 29, 2007 05:06 PM

all this angst is for naught ladies........stay pure to both......vote green party "cynthia McCommie". A chicken neck in every pot!!

Posted by: patrick on November 29, 2007 05:15 PM

I wonder what these college girls would do if Condoleezza Rice was one of the Republican candidates? A black woman running for president? Should be a no brainer for these political intellectuals, right? Wrong!

Posted by pana at November 29, 2007 05:22 PM

Then we would be talking about the flyer that just published, inviting everyone to the "Anyone but Condi" Rally at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Cultural Center.

Posted by: StanW on November 29, 2007 05:25 PM

Denny - even with all the covering up she did to get elected, all you had to do was listen to the woman talk - not one sensible word came out of her mouth. Heh.

Pana - didn't you know - Condi isn't black. The only way she could be black was if she was a Democrat. That's the criteria for skin color now days.

Posted by: Teresa of Technicalities on November 29, 2007 05:35 PM

Denny......

Don`t you know we are supposed to cut them sons & daughters of parents who descended from African slaves some slack because we white folks today bear the shame & guilt for the actions of the white folks (only in the United States) to bring their ancestors here?

What does it matter whether or not the person they choose is qualified....think of it as a selective reparation they are owed & entitled to.Sorta like welfare, food stamps, free medical care, low housing loans or rentals & preferential hiring or racial based job placement. After all the issue of qualification need not apply for all these other entitlements, why the big deal now for selection of a presidential candidate?

Besides you are white ,rich, snotty & certainly guilty.....the issue of racially based guilt for the sins & transgressions of our white ancestors is more important then the actual qualification of the candidate descendants of slaves select. Were this country truly repentant .....Hillary would be a black woman & Barack who is a Muslim as well as at least half white would be working at McDonalds instead of being a popular Democratic token playtoy.

This ought to infuriate Socialist Sally!

"Desiree Pedescleaux". Now how in the hell do you say that?

Posted by: james old guy on November 29, 2007 06:44 PM

Can I be a racist and say that these black women are out to prove that a black woman should not be allowed to vote for anyone at anytime. No where does qualification to run this country enter into the argument by the idiots. The gimme some handouts did come out.

Sounds t'me like these l'il grrls have given themselves a choice between the Devil 'n' the Deep Blue Sea...But I'm an old white Crank, so I don't count...

Gonna vote White Male Republican. Cause I am a White Male. Thats the first thing they see when I enter a room. That and how short and ugly I am.

Race has Always trumped gender. That is a no brainer and you of all people should know that Denny. The Hill is a Very strong woman and did not get there becuz of Billy Boy. Not saying that I am going to vote for her. Way too early to say. Too funny about the Fred bandwagon here. Hello people! He is a trained actor.

Funny, I've heard Fred thrown around here now and again, but it's far from a bandwagon Teresa. I would love to see Hunter take the gold, but he doesn't have the money, so I'm not holding my breath.

He's strong on border security, he's pro-2A, and his voting record on Military funding is outstanding...

...oh wait...He's a white male, so I guess I've already made up my mind...

Well, let's see. Find out who wants the job the most by offering Obama a sex change operation and Hillary an all-body tattoo. The one who bites is most committed to winning. Problem solved.

Posted by: Peggy U on November 29, 2007 10:47 PM

I recall Reagan was an actor too.

Posted by: Peggy U on November 29, 2007 10:55 PM

Teresa - If she had not married BJ she would have never been a senator from New York and she would not be running for prez. If you think otherwise you better lay off the booze.

Posted by: Denny on November 29, 2007 11:12 PM

Peggy U: But Reagan was the most corrupt President ever, no that was Clinton. But Reagan was impeached, no that was Clinton. But Reagan was making spots on blue dresses, no that was Clinton.

Posted by: Mark on November 29, 2007 11:17 PM

Hillary would be an unknown female if it weren't for her marriage to her philandering husband, Bill Clinton.

If I was a Dimocrat, I wouldn't vote for Obama because he is Black. (So there's the race card from a White female's point of view.)

I will NEVER vote for a female for president regardless what party she represents.

First time I have ever posted, but I read your blog every day and love it and you.

Race or gender? That really irks me. What about ability? Enough said.

Yes, I'm a white female, but if Condi Rice were running I sure would consider voting for her. I'm not a racist. I just hate stupid.

"The Hill is a Very strong woman and did not get there becuz of Billy Boy."

This comment was meant to be a joke, right? If one thinks she is a strong woman, than one has problem differentiating between strong and opportunistic. There's a difference. A big difference.

It is bad when you are pulled between two identities like that. One day my oldest son came running in the house all excited and asked me whether he was more Jewish or Black. I was busy watching football so I told him to go ask his mother. Later I asked my wife what Donleoe wanted. She said that a kid down the block had a bike for sale for $20 and he wanted to know whether he should jew him down to $10 or just steal it.
