I could make it my new French fan who is so obsessed with me that he has already sent me over ten e-mails. It looks like he has an illiterate, bigoted, anti-Semitic buddy who has posted some comments. But no. He does not rise to the level of assholinesss of this week's award recipient.
This week's AOTW goes to ex-Falcons football coach, Bobby Petrino who was too much of a pussy to coach in the NFL. He lasted thirteen games and then slunk off to Arkansas to coach the Hogs. Sounds like a good fit. You guys are welcome to him.
I never thought he was a good hire in the first place. He wanted to bring a power running game to a team with an undersized offensive line and no power back. Warrick Dunn and Jerious Norwood are fast slashing type of runners. It was gonna take at least two years to retool to Petrino's type of game. They overspent for a blocking fullback. Petrino cut their best run stopper in mid-season. Their starting quarterback found out in the media that he wasn't gonna start the next game. He alienated some of the best players on the team. In last Monday night's game the play calling was atrocious and the team gave up. Petrino obviously cannot coach in the NFL.
Anyway, on Monday, Petrino looked Arthur Blank in the eye, shook his hand, and assured him he was going nowhere. Blank, interviewed on Monday Night Football repeated what Petrino said. On Tuesday, Petrino was off to Arkansas. Maybe he considers that to be "nowhere". Watch out Arkansas. He'll stab you folks in the back as soon as he gets a better offer.
Petrino was not even man enough to say goodbye to his team in person. He had a note taped on every player's locker. What class! Lawyer Malloy, crossed out Petrino's signature and replaced it with "coward".
That pretty much sums it up. Petrino is a coward and a liar who has absolutely no class. I take that back. He has a lot of class. Unfortunately, it is all low.
Good riddance. He won't be missed.
Bobby Petrino, here's your award.
Sounds like a great prospect for my Detroit Lions.
Posted by: River Rat on December 14, 2007 10:12 PMHe stepped into a pile of shit. His 'one man team',
Mike Vik, turned out to be a felon. His backup QB's
were no better than Techs QB, Taylor Bennet.
He's a loser, and a quitter.
(RivRat: At least you guys picked up Calvin Johnson).

I think we can all agree on the "AOTW" this week.
Petrino is decidedly NOT a Class-Act! I never, ever, not ONCE saw him smile (altho, I understand he was smiling in Fayetteville AR on Wednesday).
I can kinda appreciate his rationale for wanting to abandon USS ATLFALCONS, but his modus operandi is as a Captain, already safely aboard a lifeboat, hollering back to those still aboard "Abandon Ship!".
Posted by: DanS. on December 14, 2007 10:45 PMDan - And not having the balls to face his players says a lot about him.
Bill - Even with Vick the team would have sucked. You can't have a power running game with undersized offensive linemen and small running backs. He was the wrong coach for the personnel.
Posted by: Denny on December 15, 2007 12:08 AMI don't really follow football, so I resorted to Google to confirm that there is really a guy named "Lawyer Malloy." It's a shame that Johnny Cash isn't alive to sing a song about going through life with that name.
Posted by: Jim - PRS on December 15, 2007 04:01 AMI'll be very surprised if Arkansas will be able to recruit any quality HS players for the next five years. Why would anyone want to play for this idiot?
Posted by: Ralph Gizzip on December 15, 2007 08:18 AMArkansas will never have any problem recruiting football players as long as they have no college entry requirements.
Posted by: gene on December 15, 2007 08:46 AMOh crap!
This is the guy they got to coach my Hogs?
I don't follow professional football at all so I knew nothing about the guy.
Most upsetting.

Posted by: StanW on December 15, 2007 04:29 PMCan't wait till he bails on Arkansas.
Posted by: vetfromhell on December 15, 2007 08:35 PMLou Holtz went from college to the NY Jets. Left after 13 games and went to Arkansas. People forget those things if you win.
I know how people feel about Petrino, but I don't much blame him for leaving and when he did. He came to the Falcons thinking that the had a QB and then had no one who could fill in. The players were only half-trying, and he couldn't threaten to take away their scholarships.
The Arkansas job had to be filled now because of the bowl game and recruiting. It wasn't a timing that anyone would choose but was necessary because of the college program.
Arthur Blank is finding that running a pro football team is a lot different than running a big hardware store.
Posted by: Woody on December 15, 2007 09:12 PMThose of us in the Louisville area could have told you how good Petrino's promises are. Other than Vick, he knew what he was going to in Atlanta. Blame the NFL and the D1 colleges. Wait for the surprise on the Arkansas faces when he bails on them. The SEC is to tough for Bobby, he won't last.
Posted by: Paul Gross on December 15, 2007 10:42 PMAtlanta Natives tell me that ATL has no winning-traditions because a winning tradition would give them nothing to bitch about.
I don't know that I subscribe to this, but I do know that places such as Green Bay, perhaps Chicago, certainly SF throughout the 80's, have a fan base that would rather you knock up a Daughter than ask for a jump in the line for the Season Pass being handed down from generation to generation.
If I'm not mistaken, the Frozen Tundra has been sold-out since maybe 1960 ... and the waiting-list, for any kind of ticket, is in the hundred's of thousands.
Why is that?
I think it's because, as a TEAM, they are looking-out for someone other than themselve's, something larger, inexplicable, and elusively attainable. It calls for improvisation, self-sacrifice, contribution of little things to larger purpose.
UGA is getting VERY close to achieving this sort of status. Win, lose, or draw, they give it 'the old College TRY' and it's visible to the Fans in the Stands. Notre Dame and Nebraska, big-time LOSERS this year, come to mind. 'Tis as a nothing; next year will be different.
I LIKE that and I think it has to do with the total give-&-take, the 2-way street between team and fan-base. With apology to CD, it is the "I am You as You are Me and We are All Together"-aspect. You can't buy that. It either is or it ain't. No divisiveness, only suggestion, input, commentary and S'ing TFU with anything that does not advance the TEAM as a whole.
Which is why "Me"Angelo Hall is so gone from Falcon's 08.
Comment?
Posted by: DanS. on December 15, 2007 11:12 PMOOooo...not to rub salt...but is Atlanta the team that would not use Brett Favre???
and the Coach ....GLanville??
Now where is Favre...and where is Glanville
answers>>>>>Green Bay and Portland State
You guyz want Glanville (and Elvis) back????
ty guy,
You are absolutely correct. The problem with sports fans here in the South are they are very fair weather. Only like and support the team when they are winning, but when they are losing, want nothing to do with them. They are not patient enough to build a good team, they want one yesterday. It goes back to what DanS said very well in "true" fans vs fans of the teams only when they are on the top. That being said, Gerry Glanville is a client of mine. After he went to Hawaii last year and then Portland, I see him much less than I used to, but he still calls this area home and his wife lives here (for now). I got to know him and although I'm not a pro football fan, I can tell you he's a pretty neat guy. My football fan clients bitched and moaned about him all the time about his Elvis duds, racing cars (Actually modified pick up trucks I think) and his general persona. But there was something about him that I could tell was really neat. Until June Jones left for Hawaii several years ago, I took care of his pets too. He was another feller that seemed to have a clue as to what it would take to make a good, strong football team, and now look at him. So, to the owners of the Falcons, Glanville and Jones, two very good coaches with a lot of potential, this will teach you to no be patient with the building of a team, it's coaches and players.
Ty:
We want Bill Cowher!
With a minimum wage contract that escalates with every win!
Brat's, beer, and some cheese, Baby!
Need I mention 18-degree's and a crisp blue sky?
It's like the old joke:
"Two Irishmen walk out of a Bar ...; Hey! it COULD happen!".
Posted by: DanS. on December 16, 2007 07:52 AMRay makes a good point.
What ATL needs is not skill nor ability, but SCRAPPER's. Imagine if misguided Mike Vick, as a LEADER, had pitted a particular lineman versus a particular defensive back.
Sad to note, ATL is a destination & safe-harbor for those who only want to PRETEND that they are professional.
Warrick Dunn excepted.
Posted by: DanS. on December 16, 2007 08:18 AMDan - Ain't gonna happen. Cowher turned the job down.
Posted by: Denny on December 16, 2007 10:05 PMTime to resurrect Norm Van Brocklin...,
Posted by: vetfromhell on December 16, 2007 11:59 PMCoaching's really become an honorable profession. Why just yesterday, Rich Rodriguez told his WVU team he was leaving for Michigan (and more than likely won't be coaching them in the Fiesta Bowl). And in a totally classless move, he had a grad assistant deliver his letter of resignation to the Athletic Director who was meeting with the assistant coaches later in the day. Heck, he even told his star recruit, top-rated Terrelle Pryor, before he had the letter delivered. This after flirting with Alabama last year, which resulted in a major raise, contract extension, and facilities upgrades, and stating he'd be there for years to come. I can't help but feel for all the players these scumbags leave in their wake. I'm sure this crap goes a long way in building bridges of trust Let's see...Petrino, Saban, Rodriguez, Price etc.....ah, the love of money......
