Sunday Metal

Howsa 'bout starting Sunday off with some metal?

Hey punk rockers, rap dipshits, and whatever passes for music today, these guys are loud, but they actually play chords and notes and stuff. Yannow, recognizable music. They're old but they can still rock! This was recorded recently.

How d'ya like these guys, CD? I saw them live back in the '80's.

JP rocked! To bad he is a flamer. I loved Green manalishi with a three pronged crown, Diamonds and rust, Electric eye and The ripper. Classic!

May I suggest one for next week?

Posted by: kerrcarto on January 27, 2008 12:49 AM

OK, so it seems Judas Priest can still hammer out a song.

I gotta ask, though... Is that a walker that Rob Halford's leaning on? He looks like he's about 80 years old.

I rocked to those guys, but for some reason these guys got cranked louder...

Awesome!! Dude, run with the Sunday Metal thing...and I'm with kerrcarto [hey, bro!] and CharlieDelta...old Maiden next week...please. Bruce Dickinson has some mad singing skillz, and Steve Harris...fuggedaboudit.

Alice Cooper, grand-father of them all... Saw him in Ottawa in the 60's, loud and crazy...the music made sense...great showmanship...Still going strong...Old is good...Devoted fans don't die...

Have you heard of Lordi? Euro rockers.

Posted by: Doug on January 27, 2008 10:25 AM

Sweet! A little Black Sabbath some sunday would be nice too.

I couldn't have said it better myself, Denny. For what passes as music today is an embarrassment.

Just to give you an idea of how bad it is today, check this out. In fact, crank Judas Priest first, then click on my link. I promise you you'll spill your coffee. It's painful.

Pretty good choice. I've been listening to those guys since the late seventies and they can always rock it out. For a while in the nineties Halford left the group and they sucked for awhile but he rejoined a couple of years back.

Posted by: Richard on January 27, 2008 12:19 PM

And then do this one after kerrcato's.

"Yannow, recognizable music."

I listened to the clip, and the only thing I can gather is that "recognizable music" is purely a subjective concept.

I have always thought that the sounds of "heavy metal" was reminiscent of the sound my grandmother's cat was making while she was giving birth to a litter of kittens under the porch one summer. But oh well. I remember these guys from the 80's, but I did note that in their videos they were dressed like the guys in the "Blue Oyster" scenes in the Police Academy movies. Accordingly I wasn't as shocked as my Platoon Sergeant when the lead singer was on record talking about his homosexuality.

Not that they can't play chords and all that, but I will take a great classic jaazz session with no singing any day of the week over any other sort of music.

Paul- I hope you agree; you sent us there... YYZRush is a good group.(and not because they're Canadian). The drummer is great, and they also do scales on the guitar. That's technical skill. Without it, you might as well give up.
What do I know? I'm just a Saturday Bach fan...

Sometimes, Claudia...you just gotta rock!!!!!! Now crank up Denny's Judas Priest video real loud!! You know you love it!

Posted by: Paul on January 27, 2008 01:38 PM

That's a fantastic DVD. Highly recommended.

How about Fred Waring & the Pennsylvanians?......OK! that was a joke for those of you that know who they were.Any hard driving early rock is OK by me. As long as you could understand most of the lyrics & recognize the guitar riffs as music & made by a human.
ZZ Top, CCR, Early Stones,BTO, Well you get my drift. Funny thing is I like Zydeco, Delta & Chicago blues & Original Country.

Most excellent choice, Denny! I've seen them a few times, with the last one being just a couple of years ago, and they frickin' rock!

And count me in on the Maiden, too! I'm a HUGE Maiden fan...

Dkelsnith - I'm just comparing it to what passes as music today. Classic jazz? Those guys had to be good because of all the improvisation they did.

Posted by: Denny on January 27, 2008 04:14 PM

Paul- OK, I cranked up Denny's Judas Priest real loud, as you said. It's true: they play chords, there is a melody, and they rock. Do they ever rock!!!
Now, I have to return to Saturday Bach to calm down...To each his own, I guess. I always wonder why so few people comment on classical guitar.

Posted by: Claudia in Toronto on January 27, 2008 05:48 PM

I'm with Jon Spencer and Echo5.

Metal on Sunday mornings would be great.

As I live and breathe! GOC is a Judas Priest fan. I'll be damn. Rock on Denny. They are one of my favorites. My respect for you grows by the day.

Posted by: Assrot on January 28, 2008 12:12 AM

Hey Joe-
Denny has been known to rock! Maybe GOC a.k.a. GOR?

Posted by: CharlieDelta on January 28, 2008 02:17 AM

Keep this going! How about some "Heaven and Hell" (Black Sabbath) from the recent tour, or some classic stuff like Starz, Thin Lizzy, Nugent or Blue Oyster Cult.
This must become a weekly addition.
