The French Stink

Grand Serge in Quebec sent me this article.

France stops smoking, starts smelling

They said it could never happen. Unlike Americans, Britons or Italians, French smokers would rebel rather than yield to government orders to stop. But nearly six weeks into the start of the ban, they have meekly obeyed and the predicted revolt has not occurred in the bars and bistrots.

Geez. What do you expect? They haven't surrendered to anyone in a while. Why not surrender to their own gummint?

As in other places, there have been some odd consequences. One is the body odour that fills the smoke-free air in discos and crowded clubs as the night drags on. Paris clubs are struggling to find alternative scents to mask the sweaty smell that is said to be turning off customers, especially women. Managers do not want to talk about it for fear of losing trade. "We've had enough trouble with the ban on smoking. On top of that we don't want people saying that the place stinks as well," said a club manager near the Place de l'Etoile.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Proof positive that the French stink.

France being the thoughtful place that it is, the pong issue has prompted discussion not of hygiene but of the psychology of odour. Why are we repelled by bodily scent, Libération wondered the other day. It hauled in Annick Le Guerer, an anthropologist and philosopher, to explain that bad smells trigger a part of the brain that makes people think of death. She suggested taking Nietzche's positive approach to smell rather than Freud's bourgeois negative one. Nietzche apparently proclaimed that "my whole genius is in my nostrils." Freud said that society could not function unless it ignored smells. Before anyone starts making anti-French remarks, the same smell problem caused a stir in England when they stopped smoking there.

Y'mean the Brits stink as well? Geez. maybe EUropeans should bathe more.

There have been other unintended consequences of the tobacco ban. One is the expansion of heated semi-open terraces where smokng is allowed. Despite cold weather these are often more crowded than the warm bars and dining areas inside. Maybe not for long because the Brussels Commission is thinking about a Europe-wide ban on the so-called propane parasols that heat the night air.

Prolly 'cause of the global warming hysteria.

Owners are also reporting another trend: unscrupulous customers who use an outdoor cigarette break to abscond without paying. Some establishments watch their smoking customers carefully, insisting that they leave some possession at the table as a sign that they are coming back. Gerard, landlord of a bar on the raffish rue Oberkampf told us that he gets suspicious when he sees everyone rise from a table to go out for a smoke after the main course.

Take a smoke break and split. They stink and they're dishonest. Go figger.

So smoke improves aroma, eh? Smoked fish does smell better than just a plain old dead fish, so I guess that could be true.

"rue Oberkampf "

Geeze, that just speaks for itself!

Posted by: Gus Bailey on February 11, 2008 07:05 PM

PeggyU - good point about the fish, but I think here the thing is smoked FROG vs unbathed FROG.....

And the mongoloid show continues. You have nothing to do in your shabby lives, with your brains full of outdated and silly cliches about the French ?Anglosaxons are a bunch of uneducated primates, and incult rednecks.Travel a little outside your shitholes,to fill your empty brains.France and the French fuck you.

Posted by: anti US HOGS says on February 12, 2008 08:56 AM

Wow, anti US, your post was so full of thought and intellect, I'm well, brought to tears. Do you have anything of significance to say/share because that last hissy fit surely doesn't show it. Remember that the world has the Anglosaxons to thank for pretty much every damn nice thing they have in their lives, so a little bit of appreciation would be in order. We do run the world you know?! See ya.

Posted by: Ray on February 12, 2008 09:20 AM

You rule nothing.Soon China and India are going to definitively fuck you.1944 was almost 1 century ago.Come in the real world.Assholes.

Posted by: anti US HOGS says on February 12, 2008 09:54 AM

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I knew I could bait a smelly frog. Go take a shower anti US Hog. The water won't make you melt. When the Moo-slimes take over France you'll be begging for us to come rescue your sorry asses again.

Yep 1944 was over 60 years ago and it's been almost 100 years since France was a world power. It will never be one again. You are so jealous of us mongrels. We're richer and more powerful than France ever was and ever will be. GFY Froggie!

Posted by: Denny on February 12, 2008 12:50 PM

Americans are certainly cleaner and more educated than the French. That is why I am so envious of you. I would like to suck big
American dick.

Posted by: anti USHOGS says on February 12, 2008 01:47 PM

Iam an impotent little French fag.I pass my time hidden behind a computer.Iam a true loser living in a smelly country.

Posted by: Anti US HOG on February 12, 2008 02:36 PM

I am so jealous of US. I would like to suck Georg Bush dick. U hate being smelly Frog.

Posted by: Anti US HOG on February 12, 2008 02:56 PM

Dude - I really feel sorry for you for being French. And the mongrel thing? France has been invaded by Rome, Franks, Vikings and various other sundry folks. So you French are part Gaul, Celt, German, Norse, Italian and other races. No racial purity for you Froggy. You're as mongrel as I am. Live with it asshole. While you're at it, take a bath. You stink. George Bush wouldn't even allow you to suck his cock.

Posted by: Denny on February 12, 2008 03:05 PM

.....we are getting some weird ass froggies in the GOC.....

Posted by: patrick on February 13, 2008 01:11 AM

Hi,
What a joke... I'm French and I bathe twice a day, every day. So do all my friends. My wife's armpitts are ALWAYS shaved.
These stereotypes are childish and mean. In France, we don't waste time to bash American people like that. Please give us a fucking break instead of hating people for free.

And oh... Please don't care about what anti-US hog says on this blog. His comments are pointless and don't reflect at all the French mentality towards USA. We don't have anything at all against you guys, this is a myth. We know what we owe to your country, and we won't forget, despite what Denny Wilson likes to say about that. Try to be a bit more critical about the crap in these articles...
Cheers, Eric

Prosper,where are you?

Prosper.....defend France if you will, surely you take exception to the attitude of the troll "Anti USHOG" If you speak up along with Eric thats two reasonable Frenchmen....its a start.

Posted by: dudley1 on February 13, 2008 09:19 AM

Mmmmh, actually I don't feel the need to defend my country toward dumb old-fashioned stereotypes. I just state facts. We bathe. Everyday. Live with that, lol.
I don't mind when people crack jokes about us as soon as it's not nasty or offending. The thing is, this blog spreads twisted cliches about France and this is just wrong. I just don't get the point, cause this isn't even funny AT ALL.

Believe it or not, France loves your country, whatever the US medias say. Personnaly I would be ready to help you defend your country in case of need. I don't forget what you did for us 60 years ago. I'm just sick and tired of reading all this surrendering-smelling-bathing crap on blogs like this. I was looking for a friendly English forum and I stumbled across this one. That was a very shocking and disappointing experience, I hafta say. Well... I guess some people can't live without beeing frustrated after something or someone. I pity them.
Cheers,
Eric

Eric - Believe it or not, I actually have a few French friends. I've met some of them through this blog. I love to poke fun at the French just because of dipshits like anti US Hog. French folks with a sense of humor won't be offended just like anti-American rhetoric doesn't bother most of us. I think the freedom fries thing was laughable. I'm glad you guys elected Sarkozy. He's the first pro-American leader you've had in a long time.

Posted by: Denny on February 13, 2008 12:48 PM

Eric: If I were you, I wouldn't pay too much attention to what's being said. On March 21st,07 they bashed French-Canadians and wrote that Canada would be glad to get rid of us. I read that post and laughed my head off. "My father would have said: Tabernacle! They're nuts!"
The truth is: Ottawa has nightmares about Québec leaving. The whole country is bilingual and bicultural to keep us in. The Prime Minister has to speak both languages to be elected. A few from both sides are hostile. But mostly we live in peace, and even in love.

It's the same with the Americans and the French.
I suggest, you go on the sidebar, and read Denny's soft side. You'll NEVER want to leave him.

If you're grateful for what was done 60 years ago, don't forget that the British and the Canadian Armies were also in Normandy. Not only the Americans. I can name the Beaches, and the number of people. It was a joint effort. It was a long time ago. And we all did it to save all of us from the Germans. Not only the French.

Cheers! Saluts chaleureux du Canada.

Denny: LOL! You're stuck with this Canuk!

Posted by: Claudia in Toronto on February 13, 2008 02:58 PM

Claudia - I like Canucks. I've also learned not to drink with them. The ones I have, drank me under the table.

BTW, my ski instructor last week was Canadian. BC. He was incredible! Unfortunately, he's going back to BC to start his own adaptive ski program so I won't see him next year.

Posted by: Denny on February 13, 2008 03:15 PM

Denny - Yeah, I'm glad to have Sarkozy as a president as well. He's really pro-american, and I think it's a good thing. We've got too many extreme lefties in our country, but this is due to our history. Actually they represent a very, very small part of the population, but the medias tend to give them way too much exposure. Anyway, everyone in France knows Sarkozy's interest for the USA, and as he was very largely elected, this is another objective proof that French people want to roll with the USA (for the most part).

Still... Your way of making fun of us is really, say..."violent". I know, I know, this is your blog, you're da masta and you do what you want here, granted. But even it this is mostly 2nd degree, sometimes words hurt (now this is my bloody soft side, lol).
Hey... time for my shower of the evening !
Eric

Posted by: Eric on February 13, 2008 05:50 PM

Eric - Its nice that you indicate you'd defend our country and maybe you really mean it. but you just got through with decades of chirac. He was anti american ... period. The Iraqi nuclear reactor, the not allowing us to fly our bombing raids over france (then of course the lybian's bomb you), the cowardice with Sadamm. before that quiting NATO.

Your country's record "helping" us is suspect at best. Sarkozy is a breathe of fresh air...but you guys have some work to do as far as I'm concerned. Personally I don't see it happening with the muslim problem you people have over there. maybe you are right though...we will see.

Posted by: patrick on February 14, 2008 12:16 AM

Patrick - You make some valid points. Chirac was a nice fellow, but a very bad president. He made almost NOTHING during his presidence. He was really good at winning elections, but once he was elected, it was just as if his mandate didn't interest him anymore. I wouldn't say he was anti-American though, I'd rather say he couldn't stand G. Bush. I hafta say I understand him on this one.
The muslim problem : indeed, this is one heck of a problem, but this is not limited to France. Don't mix Islam with Islamism though. I know good muslims who work, care about others and respect the law. They are the first one to suffer from the terrorists acts. Take an example in the USA : all the mass murderers who slaughter people in universities are good white American males, often close from the extreme right minorities. Nothing to do with muslims, but rather a question of society : how come so many weapons are available in teenager's hands ? Shouldn't you change your constitution to restrict the access to handguns ?
And should I remind you that the USA endured spectacular riots in the 90's as well ? At this time (and this is not so far away), I don't think you would have been able to lecture us about social balance... Just a thought.
As for the Iraki "cowardice", I would rather say it was a deep difference of points of view between our countries. I was against the war in Iraq as well, and it seems that lots of Americans share my opinion, even if I realize this blog is not the good place to say things like this, lol...
Anyway, you can't judge a country's population only through their military support to the USA ! Friendship between individual people are more important than alliances or argues between gummints, don'tcha think ?
Besides, it would be really naïve to think that the US government always acts like a white knight who wants to save the princess in her tower. Talk about underground struggles for oil, support to numerous dictatures in South America, etc... Every country has its black sides and its hidden interests.
That's why I think we shouldn't care about what a country's government does to judge his population. My door's warmly open to every American fella who will be willing to discover our culture. and vice versa ! And that's the most important thing !
Thanks for reading, cheers y'all,
Eric

Posted by: Eric on February 14, 2008 09:42 AM

Shouldn't you change your constitution to restrict the access to handguns ?

Eric-
NO! Gun control isn't about guns, it's about control and our gummint already has too much of it.

Posted by: CharlieDelta on February 14, 2008 12:02 PM

Eric: Historically, when totalitarian governments have arisen, one of the first things they do is to disarm their citizens. I believe that's the reason for the existence of the Second Amendment.

Posted by: Peggy U on February 14, 2008 12:52 PM

Eric
a few things.

The Virginia Tech massacre was a Korean - not a white boy. His having guns broke our laws. It was not in compliance with US Law. Making laws more restrictive in an effort to supress people who break laws anyway is a foolish waste of time and penalizes Lawful Americans.

Had it not been for the Oil in the mideast, we would not be in Iraq. agreed. we are not after all in Rwanda or darfour and neither is anyone else. France was there for oil too. what money paid france for the sadamm's nuclear reactor? oil. Frances/ Chirac's blatant disregard for the restrictions for oil for food were a primary enabler of sadamm being able to keep power, hence abuse power, hence us being there killing jihadists.

You are correct in that many americans do not agree with the war. thats ok. They like are victims of incorrect thinking in my mind. France is worse though. Your country's relationship with Sadamm built him into the threat he was. I fail to see any how France is an ally to the US in any meaningful way.

Posted by: patrick on February 14, 2008 01:48 PM

Patrick - I agree with you on the fact that France's international positions may have been very contradictory. As I said before, I think that's about to change with our new president, which seems to be very pragmatic in his relationship with the USA and the rest of the world.
And by the way, a man who scores a supermodel can't be that bad, lol !

About the control of guns : well, I get your points, even if I don't agree with them. But I respect them and I understand your points of view. I guess the possession of a gun may be linked to your history as well.

There would be many other things to be said, but I just hope I gave you reasons to think that we French guys are not the anti-American scumbags you may think we are.

Thanks for beeing more gentle in your comments than in some of the blog's posts. Cheers !

Posted by: Eric on February 14, 2008 04:14 PM

Oh yeah, another thing : sure, the last killing was made by a Korean, but all the former ones, as far as I know, were made by white males. Anyway, no muslims in the bunch.

And all the serial killers as well are white males in their very great majority. But this is another topic.

Posted by: Eric on February 14, 2008 04:22 PM

Eric-
You may be correct about serial killing, but as far as overall homicides in the U.S. it's an entirely different story. As you say though, this is another topic.

Posted by: CharlieDelta on February 14, 2008 04:51 PM

Charliedelta - Ok, so far for the stats, but we can't take them roughly like that. Black people have been living in ghettos for ages, and we know how this kind of life brings to criminality. The problem is the same in France too. This is not a racial question at all, and this kind of demonstration sounds a bit shocking to me. If you put a white guy in a ghetto since the beginning of its life, he would surely follow the same violent path.
I don't believe in the easy " white caucasian high-quality society / black perverted violent scum" axiom. This is called racism. I believe in education. For those of us who saw the first ray of light in wealthy, secured families, it's always easier to grow up in straight boots. My opinion.

Posted by: Eric on February 14, 2008 06:35 PM

Wow, Denny, I'm sorry. I thought you'd get a lot more spamming on your blog, but you only got one guy.

All the others are awsome. Salut tout le monde. Enjoy!
