March Guild Function

Let's see what kind of torture the Sommelier Guild of Atlanta has in store for me tonight. We're holding the function at Grace/17.20. We hold a lot of functions there since one of our members knows the owner and the food is always good. I only live ten minutes away which makes it convenient for me. The only downside is we eat upstairs and I have to get up and down them. No elevator.

The featured grape tonight is grenache. Here are the wines and food.

Speaker’s Wine Consilence Grenache Blanc 2006

First Flight
Yangarra Old Vine 2005
Consilience “Rodney Shull” 2005
Long Hop 2006
Kenneth-Crawford “Larner” 2006

Roasted New Zealand lamb loin with wild mushroom bread pudding, rosemary jus

Second Flight
Coto de Hayas 2004
Artazo “Santa Cruz” 2005
Menguante (Seleccion) 2004

Seared Ahi tuna “scallop,” crispy buckwheat noodle cake, caper crème, roasted garlic oil

Third Flight
Château de la Gardine Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1998
Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1998
Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1998

Maple Leaf Farms muscovy duck carpaccio with dried cherry & chili duck leg confit spring roll

I'm looking forward to the third flight. 1998 was a good year for Rhones. I only bought two cases for my cellar and I'm down to one bottle of Gigondas. I had six bottles of the Beaucastel and I drank the last one last year. I really should stock up on 2005's since that was a good year for Rhones as well.

I don't know who would dislike me enough to give my e-mail address to Michael Moore but I got an Easter note from him today with all his usual gibberish. It could be a friend playing a joke on me knowing how I feel about the guy's ranting and raving. Fortunately I can cancel my name from his list. I can't believe anyone would pay attention to what this man is saying. It's so inane!

Claudia - Could have been Teresa (TDO) since she believes all the bullshit that Michael Moore shovels.

That sounds great. I'm out of the 98's, with only a couple of bottles left of the 96 & 97 Beaucastel, some 97 Vieux Telegraphe, and some 99 de la Cote. Thanks for the tip on the 2005's, may have to go up to Chicago soon...

The Mushroonm thingy sounds good. We'll be noshing on a stir fry with beef and veg with rice pilaf, and a crispy Coke on ice with a bendy straw. Mas bony appititties! :)

Laughing Wolf - Get some of the 2005 Brunel Cotes du Rhone. $10 a bottle. Good stuff and ready to drink now.

Will check that out, and will also look for some more Beaucastel and Vieux Telegraphe as they have aged well. I miss not getting to San Diego once a month for the tastings at The WIne Vault. On the upside, just scored two tickets to the local Wines on the Wabash event. Will have to do some more wine postings at my place here soon...

Sounds great Denny. Enjoy our lamb--it goes well with lighter reds. Getting up the stairs might be a pain in the ass, but you'll feel no pain coming down them. Regards,

Geoff - As a matter of fact, I did fall going down the stairs. Scared some people. This may be my last tasting at Grace.
