The azaleas in front of my library are in full bloom. They're a little late this year because of all the global warming we have had. I keep meaning to replace that bush in front with an azalea. Can't do it this year as we are in a drought and there are watering restrictions.
Posted by denny at April 24, 2008 03:44 PMGorgeous azaleas. They never seem quite so exuberant in Jersey. The tulips are still going here. The leaves on the trees are coming out but it won't be all done until Memorial Day weekend.
Posted by: Becs on April 24, 2008 05:44 PMDenny, what do you fertilize your azala's with to get them so full of blooms? I have several beautiful bushes that are thick with leaves, but they never have that amount of flower on them.
Posted by: Ray on April 24, 2008 06:19 PMRay - I don't do anything. They were part of the landscaping when I moved in 10 years ago. All I've done was mulch them with pine nuggets.
Posted by: Denny on April 24, 2008 06:34 PMIt's beautiful!
Posted by: Claudia in Toronto on April 24, 2008 07:49 PMI have read that both azaleas and rhododendrons do well near pine trees because of the dropped needles. Probably why ours have done well over the years.
Posted by: Peggy U on April 24, 2008 08:33 PMIf you want to come to KS I will give you all the water you can carry home with you. If you lived closer to the Mississippi River, you could wait a couple of weeks and it would be there. We got 3 inches yesterday afternoon/last night. The creeks are up and the crops are not getting planted. We had 55+ mph wind too. I renamed my garden New Orleans after the last big rain we had about 3 weeks ago.
Posted by: Mark on April 24, 2008 10:15 PMnice plantation shutters too!!
when we bought our place a couple years ago from friends, I had to dig up some sorry ass dead azaleas. it was wishful thinking on their part. they just don't do well in N Texas. one of the spots was super shady, put in caladiums. doing great. 2 others sunny, put in lantana. it does great the hotter it gets.
Posted by: patrick on April 24, 2008 11:28 PMPeggyU...Azaleas and Rhodies both love the acidic "soils" that is why they explode under Pine and Firs..You can adjust your "mulch" accordingly and basically find a great place and leave them alone..some love Sun and some otherwise, they all all over the map
Posted by: ty guy on April 25, 2008 03:37 AMAww, don't be so hard on the poor l'il ole bush ! OK, he's maybe out of place 'n' all, but he's still kinda cute...But no matter what, it looks like you have a LOVELY home, in the best, gracious, Southern manner, my friend !!
Posted by: Sandy G on April 25, 2008 08:47 AMYou have a library? I'm jealous! Our excess books live in UHaul boxes in the garage.
Posted by: Peggy U on April 25, 2008 12:03 PMPeggyU - Yep. I posted a picture of it right after the hardwood floors were installed. My friend Wahoo built me some beautiful built-in bookcases.
Patrick - I have plantation shutters on my windows in the library and the dining room. The rest of the house has blinds.
