Sunday Metal

It's amazing how many rock bands really kick ass when they go to Japan. Have you ever heard Cheap Trick's Live at Budokan? My first Sunday Metal was Judas Priest recorded live in Japan. Here's Guns and Roses in Tokyo.

What I wouldn't give to be able to play guitar like Slash. He said recently that he was the last great lead guitarist. When I listen to the crap that is coming out now, I believe him. None of the current rock bands have anyone who can play lead guitar.

Saturday Bach conclusion.

Born in 51, I also grew-up with Rock and Roll and later "Hard Rock", "Acid Rock" and "Heavy Metal".
(HM named after the cartoon magazine.) Loved it
too.

Thanks for making me feel a little less lonely.

Rock-on!

Pete

I think Axl had a wardrobe misfunction.

CharlieDelta...
You still have a working 8 Track????
How cool are you...that was my favorite way to play music...hooked it up to a battery charger so I could play it in my room and make the deck quick release from Mom's car...No I did not make enough money to buy my own wheels but Mom's car was a beast...Plymoouth Fury station wagon with a 383...I buried the spedometer many a times passing those shitty cameros!!!!

ty guy-
Negative on the workin 8-track. I wish. Somewhere in boxes I have Dirty Deeds, and maybe even Moving Pictures.

Those were good times in the back of the station wagon...

You all need to get out more. Best metal is coming from Europe these days. Four off of he top of my head..

Herman Li
Sam Totman
Steve Stevens
Marco Hietala (All the more remarkable as he is the bassist, but he has the attitude and skills)

OTOH, this has turned into "8-TRACK Memory Lane" so maybe the modern stuff has passed you by.

good to go back in time once in awile
You stay up late on the west coast...I am at work is my reason...what is yours Night Owl????

I think you get the best live shows from Japan because the audience is usually so well behaved, compared to American or European audiences. There's no distracting shouting or whistling during the playing, at least not in any of the live shows I have and the performers don't have to battle the bellowing of drunken idiots, catcalls and altercations in the crowd. I have a huge collection of live King Crimson performances, the best of which were recorded in Japan. It's one thing for a metal or hard rock band to be able to play over the background noise, but when you're trying to listen to someone like KC or David Sylvian or Bowie, or any other artist that relys on the subtle qualities of their music, it's nice not to have the great unwashed howling in competion with the performance.

I still have a working 8-track. It's on an Akai reel to reel tape deck. It allows me to copy reel to reel to 8 track and vice versa. It also allows me to copy vinyl to 8-track. I bought it in the 60's when I was on the USS Iredell County LST-839. I quit using it back in the 70's when 8-track went away, but it still works.

MunDane - Do they have any good lead guitar players or are they just banging out power chords?

Posted by: Denny on April 27, 2008 07:35 PM

Denny you can go reel-to-reel to 8 track???

What would Michael Jackson sound like on 8 track???

can you get blank 8 track tapes any more???

Posted by: ty guy on April 27, 2008 09:24 PM

ty guy - Yep! I can if I still wanted to. As to Michael Jackson on 8-track, a brother of a friend of mine had me overwrite an 8-track of a decent band (can't remember which one) with a Jackson 5 album fir his girlfriend. This was when the Jackson 5 was popular so you know how long ago that was.

I was six or seven when my big sister got "Live at Budochan". A classic in my book, obviously.

Some memories are short. Axel Rose spit on Montreal once.

Yeah. I wasn't even there, but I remember.

MunDane-
The modern "stuff" hasn't passed me by, I was just reflecting on some good times of the past.

As to the four "off the top of my head" comment, big deal. I thrash all over the place too. It doesn't mean that I'm good or anything. It's just thrashing for thrashing's sake... Big deal.

I'd just as soon crank this. As a matter of fact, I think I will right now...

Posted by: CharlieDelta on April 27, 2008 11:14 PM

CD - You proved my point. Not a good guitar player in that band.

Posted by: Denny on April 27, 2008 11:33 PM

Denny...Imagine a Dead-Head jumping to an 8 track at a garage sale...Label of his favorite Dead album only to find the Jackson 5 when he "loaded' it in his machine!!!
God I would love to see that face!!!!!!

Posted by: ty guy on April 28, 2008 12:31 AM

lead guitar is not dead!!!!!!
there is a new band trying to make it out of middle ga, called down from zero. their guitar player is a monster!!!!!

Y'all ought to check out Dream Theater. Coming to the Tabernacle in Atlanta, May 28. John Petrucci is one of the best guitarists out there. Lots of video on YouTube.
