It's A Miracle

Holy crap! The Atlanta Urinal and Constipation published an editorial I actually agree with. Was that a pig I saw flying by my window?

U.S. Sen. James Webb, a Virginia Democrat and Vietnam combat veteran, is championing legislation to improve college tuition benefits for those who volunteer to serve their country in the U.S. military. Under his proposal, today's veterans would get roughly the same benefits offered those who served during World War II.

"For all who have been saying that this is the newest 'Greatest Generation,' " Webb argues, "this is the easiest way for us to prove that."

Webb's approach has won support from members of both parties, with 57 senators and 292 congressmen —- including 89 House Republicans —- as co-sponsors.

I agree totally with this. Our military is 100% volunteer and we do not do enough for them. This is the least we can do.

However, the bill is opposed by Republican leadership in Congress, by GOP presidential nominee John McCain and by President Bush on grounds that it is too generous and could hurt re-enlistments.

And you guys are wondering why you are losing elections? This is just one of those reasons.

However, as Webb and others point out, up to 75 percent of soldiers and Marines already return to civilian life after their first enlistment. Those who "re-up" are probably committed to a military career, where they could get tuition assistance from the military while on active duty.

True. My nephew reenlisted. He plans to make the Army his career.

Shame on you Republicans who do not support this bill! It may be a Dimocrat ploy to make you look bad (This editorial was written by Jay Bookman who is a liberal and has been against the war from the start.) and if you don't support it, it will make you look bad and deservedly so.

Our men and women in uniform —- less than 1 percent of the American population —- bear a vastly disproportionate share of the burden of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Giving them the chance to earn a college degree is not too great a reward for that service.

Hear! Hear!

Just another reason McRINO is going to be a sucky President.
I wonder if his BFF The Swimmer is against the bill also?

heard last night that estimates are that the govt received $7 in addtl productivity and tax revenue from GI bill recipients for every $1 that was spent on the program.

While I am sensitive that Republicans do not want to deincentivize reenlistments, I agree that it wont make a lot of difference and that it will probably increase enlistments on the front end.

My dad went through college on ROTC scholarship and the military paid for his masters at pepperdine. He always appreciated that.

The Dimocrats are once again using an emotional issue to get their way and continue their march to power. Every one is in favor of a GI Bill. The Dimocrat version encourages leaving the military after one tour. This reduces manpower making it harder to keep the military strong and thereby undermining the war in Iraq.

The argument that more would be willing to join the military to get the benefit goes against the reality that, thanks to all kinds of grants, you don’t have to enter the military to go to college.

Our colleges have become liberal madrasas. The more young skulls full of mush that the Dimocrats can get into college, the more voters they get. I didn’t go to college until I was 53 and inoculated, by life experience, against the liberal propaganda. And it is rampant.

Khrushchev was right. We will fall, like a ripe plum, into the hands of Communism.

Sorry to be so pessimistic.

Note to Art: Communism died in 1989. Thanks for playing.

Webb is a nutcase. He was Secretary of the Navy until he found out he was not getting a 600 ship navy. Then he quit like a petulant child. He flipped parties in 2006. Good war record, outstanding marine, shitty politician.

I think we should also take care of the soldiers who CAN'T re-enlist, like the ones coming back with severe injuries. Let's hope Congress and the President don't forget about them and their families.

Since when have the Democrats given a rat's ass about the military? Oh, yeah, it's an ELECTION year. No pandering here. Question: Why didn't they enact this legislation when we first went to an all-volunteer military?

Yes, I question the timing.

Posted by: GarandFan on May 9, 2008 02:48 PM

Do we really know for sure that the GOP is apposed to this bill? Do we really know what's attached to the bill? For intstance, if it passes, do the soldiers that rightly deserve the benefits of a college education provided by the taxpayer while get that education while at the same time libs/dims/socialists get some other perk that they don't deserve because of the wording of the bill. Not only do I question the timing, but I question the motives behind the party that is championing the cause.

Uh, let's do a bit more research before condemning Repubs. Isn't this the bill that the Dems are trying to attach to the latest war funding bill, that they've also larded up with pork, because the President has said he'd veto a bill that was larger than he asked for, so they (the Dems) can make precisely the claim that the Repubs are trying to shortchange the troops?

Denny, thank your nephew for me. If I ever get the chance to meet him I owe him a beer and a handshake!

Vet: You're welcome. Discussions on opinions are rarely fruitful but, two points.

When the Soviet Union broke up, some of us were saying that the only two places in the world still into Communism were Cuba and the US Congress. And, have you been paying attention to what is happening in Russia these days?

For those who might be interested in how it’s happening, I recommend Thomas Sowell’s book, The Vision of the Anointed: Self-congratulation as a Basis for Social Policy.

I'm with Rick C on this one. If the Dems support the troops, this bill should be separate, no strings attached. I learned about this bill from Ace of Spades. According to him, the Dems' attached this bill with extra funding. They know W will withdraw it, hence, everything will be cancelled. Then they can boast how "they" care about the troops and W. doesn't. And if/when the Dems get a straight flush, they will not renew this bill.
If this is true, it is a setup, and once again innocents are being used.

Don't believe what you hear about Webb. I live in Va and If he's behind it you had better look under every rock, there's a snake hiding and will bite you on the ass. I served 22 years and would trust Mrs BJ with my benefits before I would the slime bag Webb. He's playing a political game with the Vets, again. When a democrat offers a free lunch you will need a democrat to taste it first, there's poison in it somewhere. I'd say a 65% increase in 'dollars' for the Vets in the past 7 years has been pretty good. Thousands of Vietnam Vets (I'm one and I know several) finally got their promised benefits, no thanks to the democrat party who caused most of the problems.

I partly agree with McCain and Bush on this. I at least see their point. In my humble opinion the Service member should have to do 6 years minumum to be eligible for the complete benefits package. or one re-enlistment if the 6 years is not appealing. We might lose too many people otherwise. We need brighter people too. We need a 15% (at least) salary increase. They should increase our pensions to perhaps 75% for doing 20 years instead of 50%. I also don't think any combat veteran who served honorably should pay any income taxes. Ever. It seems that every time we get a pay increase it does'nt even cover the rising costs of living. I'm not whining. As Don Corleone said "This is the life that we chose."
I'm glad there are people like Sen. Webb and Rep. Pete King in Washington. We need more like them.

My son-in-law just reenlisted in the Navy. I'm so proud of him.

Rachel, my son just retired from very sucessful 4 year tour as a Submariner out of Guambodia of all places. Beside his job on his boat, he was also the lead diver. He signed up after 911, and just signed an extension to go to Dive School. He has very specific goals for his future. While he appreciates the crummy pay, and a roof, he didn't get duped into it. Nor would he describe himself or his mates as innocent rubes who are being used. He actually uses more colorful sailor speak in order to describe them! I may have read your comment wrong, I guess I'm just use to blasting at TDO.

Posted by: LisaKay on May 13, 2008 06:37 AM

Lisa, I did phrase that wrong. What I meant to say was the military was being used. I support the wars on terror, and I do not trust the Dems (esp that jerk Webb) if they are not willing to make this bill separate. This is a party I often vote for and if they want to walk their talk, make this bill separate so it guarantees our soldiers get better. I'm afraid that if they don't you will never see another gi upgrade again.
