Ann and Nancy Wilson are all upset about the Republicans playing their hit Barracuda at the Republican Convention.
Nancy Wilson: We do not support the Republican party and we think that it's just terrible that they played one of our songs.
Ann Wilson: Mooooooooo!
Posted by denny at September 5, 2008 11:01 PMThey are entitled to their opinion. And I am entitled to mine. I already removed their "music" from the collection. Guess I didn't agree with them. Bummer.
Posted by: John C on September 5, 2008 11:27 PMI read an article about this in the latest issue of Rolling Stone.
Apparently, there are 3 lawsuits against the Right and 1 against the Left.
The one that made me grin is the one leveled by the creator of "Don't Rock The Boat"
I leave it to you, the reader, to figure out which one that is.
Posted by: DanS. on September 6, 2008 12:17 AMMoo? They own the rights to the song and the repukes apparently didn't ask for permission.
Posted by: Teresa on September 6, 2008 12:28 AMMost songs played in this way have increased sales because of the exposure...
they are IDIOTS..but entitled to their opinions..and to make fools of themselves
as you too Teresa are an IDIOT, also entitled to make a fool out of yourself
Posted by: ty guy on September 6, 2008 12:43 AMWhat music? If anything, the Repubs should be sued for punishing everyone with that sorry excuse for entertainment. I was just subjected to a shrill train whistle that could be claimed as more musical than what the Wilson's squawk.
-gdr-
Posted by: gdr on September 6, 2008 01:16 AMkinda with gdr on this one. never liked that song, never liked those bovines.
Posted by: patrick on September 6, 2008 01:57 AMToo bad. I liked Heart. The Wilson girls should understand the music business well enough to know that if the RNC paid their BMI/ASCAP license fee for public performance, they are legally authorized to play the song.
I suppose it's too much to hope that any rockers other than Ted Nugent aren't socialist nut jobs. They just destroy my enjoyment of their art when they start shooting their mouths off. The Nuge probably drives his lefty fans nuts, if there are any left.
I remember when they were both hot. Age is tough....
Posted by: vetfromhell on September 6, 2008 03:30 AMWhat would a dans and tdho baby look like? Sumbitch, that's a rough visual...
Posted by: vetfromhell on September 6, 2008 03:31 AMHmmmm. Okay to have it made part of that, er, interesting van gods commercial, not okay to have it played (or presumably even listened to) by anyone not a Democrat? So long as the BMI/ASCAP was paid, legal options are limited. Back in the day, I liked their stuff, very little of it seems to have stood the time test.
Dumb One, to understand the moo, dogpile (google is so yesterday) "Ooooh, Tins of Tuna!" and some of the articles that covered same.
As for Ted, he does make their little heads explode. Know someone to the left who took a then significant other who's a huge MoveOn supporter to a Ted concert. Everyone else that knows them is still laughing their asses off over that one...
Those old hags should be happy that there are still some people playing their music. They should just STFU and stay out of the limelight. What is that saying, better to be thought of as stupid than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. You're the living example of that Teresa the Moron, and the Wilson hogs are right there with you. That's why I download everything I listen to from lime wire. Don't have to worry about contributing to some liberal morons pet cause.
In regards the legal issue of playing it, here is a good article with actual legalities discussed:
http://www.slate.com/id/2199492/?from=rss
I do not understand the laws, my question is,
When I buy an album….oops, “CD” I do not see anything saying when, where and how I can play the music.
I will remove them from my music files.
It would be awesome if Ted Nugent wrote and preformed music for the political arena.
That’s right, he did. The song , “Kiss my Ass”.
Chicka-Boom, Chicka-Boom, Doncha jes' love it ? Go back to sleep, Nancy....(grin)
Posted by: Sandy G on September 6, 2008 08:15 AMWhat's the big deal? This happens all the time. John Mellencamp and Van Halen already asked McCain to stop using their songs.
Heart may be overstepping their bounds if the RNC does have the licenses to use their songs through the ASCAP. Then they are really reduced to "asking nicely".
It is their song, they should be able to decide what uses are put for it. Because, in reality, conventions are big giant commercials. And commercials certainly fall under different restrictions than say, sporting events. Well, in a perfect world that is. I'm sure it's just a "non profit convention" in the books.
Anywho, if you're going to toss out CD's b/c of an artist's political beliefs, have fun! I listen to Bob Marley w/o smoking weed, I can jam out to George Micheal even though I'm not gay, and I can surely listen to "Thriller" without wanting to take little boys to a ranch. What's something as little as difference in political beliefs?
If you are so angry that you don't want to contribute the 2% of an album price that actually goes to the artist... well, you just gave yourself a moral justification for pirating the music. Just don't let the RIAA catch you!
Side Note: You think Sarah Palin is sick of "Barracuda"? I'm not such a fan of "Rockin Robin"

This is a problem. I bought front row tickets to Heart for my wifes birthday. They appear in a couple of weeks at the local reservation ampha theater. She loves their music.
We (she) talked about it last night. We are going and I will do nothing to get arrested or thrown out.
Sheesh....
TDHO (aka the Nebraska Nitwit) - To understand my "Mooooo" reference all you have to do is look at Ann Wilson. She's fatter than you are. Nancy, on the other hand, has aged well and is still pretty hot.
Unfortunately for the Wilson sisters, their music has not really stood the test of time. You would think that they would be happy to have their music used. After all, as anyone knows, eeee-vil Republicans have more money than Dimocrats and would be more likely to buy their greatest hits album (if they have one). The only Heart songs I remember are Crazy on You, Barracuda, and Magic Man. Don't hear them much, even on the classic rock stations.
If I boycotted every rock group that was liberal, there wouldn't be much to listen to. The only people I refuse to give money to are traitors like Hanoi Jane. Most of the other celebrities, like Heart and Jackson Browne are empty headed twits. Most of Jackson Browne's music is whiney crap anyway. Redneck Friend is an exception.

i agree 100% with you, I like the Boss but not his political beliefs. The last Jane Fonda movie i seen was in the 80's, I refuse to watch 30 rock as the dimwit Baldwin (Father of the year) is on it. I am going to see the Heart concert not for them but since Cheap Trick is on the bill.
I have no problem tossing a few sheckles to the minstrels that pleasure me with their sounds. Just stick to the creative stuff and don't put that double digit IQ on display.
Posted by: patrick on September 6, 2008 12:49 PMChuck, sorry you spent your hard earned cash on Heart tickets. I had the misfortune of seeing them a few years, and one or two chins, ago. Ann would dance across the stage and her butt would finally catch up by the next chorus. Hopefully they will be serving adult beverages so you can salvage the evening.
Posted by: JackieD on September 6, 2008 02:03 PMOh well, at least Cheap Trick and Journey are on the card. Tonight, she is dragging my butt off to Santana at the same place.
I'd just as soon stay home and watch Cops.
Pray 4 me.
When I was in college in the middle to late '70s, Dreamboat Annie was a huge relief from the horrible disco that we were being subjected to. Finally some real rock & roll by people who were obviously talented, and could sing and play their own instruments. And they knew what a melody was, and could write one.
The Wilsons are still good singers and musicians, but I wish they would get over it, vis-a-vis objecting to their songs being used in political venues. Many of their fans grew up and are now conservative like me. I appreciate hearing good old rock & roll any time, especially if the song works in the context.
Truth be told, the meaning of the lyrics to "Barracuda" are not particularly complimentary to their subject. Only the title is relevant to Sarah Palin.
Posted by: KarlU on September 6, 2008 03:31 PMI wonder whether the Wilsons even own the rights to any of their songs from those days. Could be wrong, it was quite a bit of booze and weed ago but I seem to remember "Boston" took issue with their recording company over ownership of the rights to their music. Turned out they signed their rights away when they signed the recording contract. Hence they produced one great album, everything after that sucked.
Posted by: Boss429 on September 6, 2008 03:53 PMI cannot look at Jane Fonda's movies, old and new. I feel so strongly that she should have been hung for treason, or forced to live with the Vietcongs for the rest of her life.
A few years ago, a friend gave me her video for Exercises as a Birthday gift. Right in front of the friend, I hammered it in pieces. She thought I was crazy! "I could have gotten the money back." she said. I explained that it was a symbolic gesture. That's what I would want to do to Jane Fonda if I would meet her. At least, scratch her face to blood.
Posted by: Claudia on September 6, 2008 04:44 PMChuck, I'm in the same boat and agree that I'll still go cause Journey & Cheap Trick will also be at the gig here. Never seen Cheap Trick live but have seen Journey a bunch. Would never go see that asshole Santuna again. Got into a exchange with him a few years ago at an arena concert. He stopped the show to preach his horseshit liberal, you people owe the world, jargan that totally pissed me off. I was yelling for him to shut up and play cause I didn't spend my money to hear his bullshit. I'm sure I would have been thrown out but most of those in attendence started cheering. He didn't go back to playing without a few more whines but I sure felt better.
Posted by: Pres on September 6, 2008 05:22 PMYeah, the Repubs were wrong in not getting the proper permission but the Wilson gals should donate heavily to the GOP for playing their music anyway. They finally got some fresh air play!
I can't recall hearing about any new releases from Heart since one of 'em didn't have wrinkles and the other one was 200 pounds lighter! (Damn, that's been a while!)
On Wednesday night the GOP Convention should've played Terrible Ted's "Whang Dang Sweet Poontang."
Posted by: Ralph Gizzip on September 6, 2008 08:37 PMI would hazard a guess Ted would have played in in person, if asked. He is, VERY conservative, one of the few willing to admit it.
Posted by: Sandy G on September 6, 2008 08:46 PM@ Claudia,
That's pretty hilarious. I don't think I've ever seen someone destroy someone else's gift in front of their face before.
I'd probably give you various "Barbarella" paraphernalia every year just to watch you destroy it. Maybe even record it and put it up on YouTube.
"Grandma vs Barbarella action figure Round 1"
That'll show them durn libtards.
Posted by: Robin Palm on September 7, 2008 05:14 AMRobin Palm -
I can't believe I could make you laugh. You certainly never gave me a reason to even smile. My friends appreciate my honesty. Barbarella should be destroyed not only because it was Jane Fonda but because it was bloody awful.
BTW only my grandchildren call me Grandma. They're adorable. Although I don't look the part yet, I have no problem being Gramma Claude with them. For anybody else, I am Claudia. For people with your way of thinking, as expressed in a former thread, I am Ms.Prévost. Those little rules are great for survival. It's a tough world. As Governor Palin and her family are experiencing. There's always a s.o.b. pointing a self-righteous judgmental finger at you.
Posted by: Claudia on September 7, 2008 10:39 AMLiberal music bag ladies & hags......
What has happened to thank you ...after a time when their popularity has faded as it inevitably will, these has been`s should be thankful anybody even remember`s them , their music or that anyone would want to play it. Take Barbara Streisand for example...when she was a struggling ugly banana nosed chick in the village hoping for a break & using her golden throat for more then singing to put bread on the table, I`ll bet the farm she would not have complained one bit about anyone wanting to play her song`s as it might advance her career. Now she think`s she is a political expert.
By the way did any body ever have to get in touch hold with the Francis Scott Key family when the National Anthem is played. Speaking of Patriotism & Old Glory.......What say the DNC for the despicable way they attempted to discard the 10,000 to 15,000 American flag`s after the convention, I would think this to be more of an outrage then playing some liberal douchebag`s song.
I guess it depends on what country or political philosophy you are loyal to.
Posted by: dudley1 on September 7, 2008 11:31 AMWhen an artist actor or author that I enjoy listening to or watching or reading decides to start spewing their political opinions all over the place, I have an easy solution to the problem.
I write them a letter or leave a posting on an authorized web site letting them know that I was a fan and that I loved their music/movies/books and I am sorry that they were not satisfied with just being a successful entertainer and having me spend my hard earned money on them.
Since they had to take something I enjoy as much as their craft and use the fame that people like me who have spent money on them created for them to spout politics I will give them one more chance to stick to being an artist. The next time they do or say anything political I will no longer spend my money on anything they do that will put that money in their pockets.
(And they always do it again.)
If I truly enjoy their art I will still buy it. But I will buy it from a medium that does not share the profits with them. I will buy their CDs, DVDs and books used, so that they do not profit from the purchase.
Welcome to America. You are welcome to say whatever you want to, and I am free to refuse to give you any of my money because you said it.
I will continue to enjoy their music, their acting or their writing. In fact I will enjoy it even more knowing that they are entertaining me and making no profit from it.
I will keep the stuff of theirs that I have already paid for, but I will buy nothing else new.
Additionally when I do buy a used CD or DVD or Book and I have a friend who I know also enjoyed their craft I will convince my friend to also not buy their products but just to borrow my used copy. That way even more of us get to enjoy their work without them profiting from our enjoyment.
Posted by: David on September 7, 2008 11:44 PMThe Dixie Twits cut their own throat. The tour bombed, they got grammys out of sympathy from the libs. I don't listen to them anymore. period. When I hear it, I turn it. Every time.

Which is why it will be cold day in hell before anyone in my house watches the grammys again. or any other self congratulatory liberal award show like the oscars, etc.
Posted by: David on September 8, 2008 09:46 AMI hear the MTV awards were complete trash. They brought in some British comedian to bash America and stump for Obama. Oh well ... I don't watch award shows anyway.
