Take the quiz.
From Willie in the comments. I missed four. I really should have aced it. I answered the four that I missed too quickly. I would really be interested in the scores of a typical JHE voter.
Posted by denny at November 21, 2008 04:02 PM84.8 % right here. Bet I skinned the typical Jughaid voter...-Unca Sandy
Posted by: Sandy G. on November 21, 2008 04:28 PM87.9% ... I don't know enough about FDR. Also, although decreasing taxes and increasing spending is a government action that is taken during a recession, in this particular economy I don't know that government spending should be encouraged ... seems to me it's part of the problem.
Posted by: PeggyU on November 21, 2008 04:50 PMterrible! 77.5% the economics got me
Posted by: mark on November 21, 2008 05:26 PMMissed two, but got an A.
Posted by: Woody on November 21, 2008 06:31 PM26/33 78.79%
I am so ashamed. C student.
Shite. I did not know enough about
lots of stuff.
I only missed 3, one of which I should have gotten right. How I could have gotten that high a score, since I read red neck right wing blogs, don't listen to NPR and read the NYT, neighbors in Seattle can't figure it out. Maybe I need to listen to some of THE ONE's speeches to get educated.

Posted by: left coast conservative on November 21, 2008 07:26 PM77.6% blah... I missed some ones here and there. I'm in high school and I'll bet I creamed a good portion of the populace. That's not good.
Posted by: EricS. on November 21, 2008 08:10 PMCivics Test......
I missed two......Should have aced this but I screwed up.
Denny.....We already know what the typical JHE voter is likely to score as first they have no clue what civic`s is. Just like Candid Camera & Scruples, they probably think it is either a skin disease or some kind of crotch critter.
Actually I would be more interested in what JHE would score if he would be truthful which I seriously doubt.
I missed 5 for 84.85%. I second-guessed myself on a couple of those. Not bad I guess for someone who only has a high school education.
Posted by: MiketheRadioMan on November 21, 2008 09:23 PM81.82% I'm embarrassed!:(
Posted by: Michelle on November 21, 2008 09:26 PMi missed four also, but i just can't understand the last question.
if my wife and i pay taxes, but our two kids do not, and the gov't only spends what it takes in, how does the tax per person equal the spending per person? fewer pay in than benefit from the gov't.
not meaning to be daft, or be one of those annoying people who question the questions, but i just can't get my mind around what they are asking here.
any help?
thanks, pip.
Posted by: Pip on November 21, 2008 09:47 PMi cannot believe i missed 7. i am ashamed
Posted by: Peter McMillin on November 21, 2008 09:56 PMPip, I so agree with you. My husband (91, I think) got it, but it makes no sense to me (84).
What scares me is the scores of the elected officials. I've often suspected as much, what with the idiotic votes they cast.
Missed one. How I got the right to bear arms into the First Amendment is a mystery to.
Posted by: Poker Player on November 21, 2008 11:57 PMMissed two, as with so many tests I fell asleep during the darn thing.
Posted by: Jeremy on November 22, 2008 02:40 AMDenny, I missed 4, but these guys probably don't even know how to spell government: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mm1KOBMg1Y8&eurl=http://www.grouchyoldcripple.com/ .
Socialism starts 20 Jan. Sigh.
Posted by: dhmosquito on November 22, 2008 08:36 AMI hit on 29/33, so since I did as well as our esteemed Guru (Your Highness Denny) I have to figure I'm doin' okay. Then again, as a guy who keeps a copy of The Federalist Papers nearby for occasional light reading, I ought to've done even better.
Guess I know I need to spend more time reading.
Pip - I agree that one is a head scratcher. I also missed 3. that one and the gettysburg address and Puritans one (thought they hated war..)I would be shunned in the puritan community...is there still a puritan community?
the real troubling thing for me was the table that showed how the citizenry destroyed the elected officials score. This should be mandatory for those fvckers.
As for the Obama voters? after watching that disturbing clip the other day when they did not know who Harry Reid was, no depth of their ignorance could surprise me.
Posted by: patrick on November 22, 2008 11:49 AMHuh....I missed eleven. 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 14, 27, 30, 31 and 32. That's what I get for going through the Canadian public school system. On the bright side, I know that the FTA will bankrupt Canadian woodstove manufacturers two years after implementation.
Wait a second....
Posted by: Duncan on November 22, 2008 12:02 PMCrap. I missed 4. 87.88%. I made a few stupid mistakes, and now I'm just a touch ashamed of myself. I should've done better than that. On the bright (?) side, according to the quiz, the average score of the typical Americans taking it was apparently 49% (and 55% for the COLLEGE PROFESSORS), it seems that I'm way ahead of the game. Frankly, I'm not sure if that makes me feel better or worse.
On an unrelated note, I have to give out some props to Inbred Redneck for his comment above, since I'm a member of the same club. I always have a copy of the Federalist Papers handy as well. I also keep a copy of the Constitution nearby, because hell, you never know when you might need it.
Posted by: Agamemnon Jones on November 22, 2008 02:00 PMQuestion 30 was a trick question:
Which of the following fiscal policy combinations would a government most likely follow to stimulate economic activity when the economy is in a severe recession?
Probably the exact opposite of what it should do. It should decrease both taxes and spending. What would it do? Exactly what Obama is proposing.
Posted by: KarlU on November 22, 2008 04:36 PMOh, and 90.91%. I missed question 30 for obvious reasons, and the other two I guessed on.
Posted by: KarlU on November 22, 2008 04:40 PMYou answered 30 out of 33 correctly — 90.91 %
Average score for this quiz during November: 77.9%
Average score: 77.9%
You can take the quiz as often as you like, however, your score will only count once toward the monthly average.
If you have any comments or questions about the quiz, please email americancivicliteracy@isi.org.
You can consult the following table to see how citizens and elected officials scored on each question.
Where to from here?
Answers to Your Missed Questions:
Question #13 - E. certain permanent moral and political truths are accessible to human reason
Question #27 - A. the price system utilizes more local knowledge of means and ends
Question #33 - D. tax per person equals government spending per person
I'd argue some of the answers,
Posted by: Jim Macklin on November 22, 2008 05:09 PMKarl - The answer is a Keynesian answer. According to Keynes, you run deficits during recessions and surpluses during good times.
Posted by: Denny on November 22, 2008 06:22 PM75.76%.
33 - I don't agree that tax per person is spending per person because taxes aren't taken in on a per person basis. Taxes on businesses are not per person. I didn't like any of the answers to 33.
Posted by: Shannon in AZ on November 22, 2008 06:32 PMI agree with Shannon. Number 33 should be removed or replaced.
Posted by: PeggyU on November 22, 2008 07:24 PMMissed 2.
The average JHE voter thinks civics is a Honda.
Posted by: Bobbertsan on November 23, 2008 07:28 AMBobbertsan ... That was pretty good!
Posted by: PeggyU on November 23, 2008 02:22 PM29/33. I'm proud to say that I increased the monthly average.
Posted by: stine on November 23, 2008 03:03 PM31/33. Agree with Shannon and Peggy, none of the answers to 33 make sense. Perhaps if the one answer were reworded to say "...average taxes per person..." it would be more accurate.
Posted by: Grumpy Old Ham on November 23, 2008 04:17 PMYeah....let`s just ignore question 33 ,then I only missed one. In all honesty I did not understand the question as none of the answers seemed to fit so I guessed.....wrong
Posted by: dudley1 on November 24, 2008 09:45 AMDenny,
Same as you 29/33. I take exception to two of the questions however. Best way to stimulate the economy is to decrease taxes and INCREASE spending? GMAFB.
