Poof! PFM!

So Jug Hussein Ears has mandated higher fuel standards for cars.

At the end of his Rose Garden explanation yesterday of the new U.S. fuel-efficiency standards, President Obama remarked on the good that can be accomplished when we are "working together." The President may be getting ahead of himself. Watching the unlikely coalition arrayed behind him as Mr. Obama committed the U.S. to an astonishing passenger-car mileage average of 39 miles per gallon by 2016, it looks truer to say we are merely standing together in this adventure, for better or worse.

So how are we gonna do that? Simple. Poof! PFM!

Mr. Obama's fleet-mileage partners yesterday included the two auto companies that have fallen into his arms, Chrysler and GM, still-independent Ford, the major foreign manufacturers, United Auto Workers chief Ron Gettelfinger, and beaming representatives from the Sierra Club, Environmental Defense Fund and the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Guess what Gettelfinger? This is gonna just about kill the UAW as well as the American automobile industry. And just think. You and the UAW members will have done it to yourselves by supporting and voting for this rat bastard commie.

All that's left to arrive at the President's new destination for the American way of driving are huge, unanswered questions about technology, financing and the marketability of cars that will be small and expensive.

No problem. Poof! PFM!

Start with technology. The President's proposed standards would raise fuel economy goals higher and faster than even the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration believes is practical. Last year, NHTSA issued a proposed rule making that would have raised fuel economy to 32.2 mpg by 2015 for cars and light trucks combined. Its 376-page report notes that "the resources used to meet overly stringent CAFE standards . . . would better be allocated to other uses such as technology research and development, or improvements in vehicle safety."

Aw there ya go trying to use facts. The Obamessiah has ordered it. If he can lower the level of the seas he can surely raise fuel economy standards simply by ordering it done. Oh yeah, and Poof! PFM!

The new U.S. fleet will almost certainly be made up of hybrids and electric cars. This comports with the explicit intention of the President and his environmental partners to back out fossil fuels. One may ask: Once Detroit is forced to build these cars, will free Americans want to buy them, at any price?

Now who wouldn't want to buy cars from Gummint Motors? We'll have the Pelosimobile and the Obamamobile. In other words, a bunch of Crapmobiles.

Unless we outlaw the bigger cars that recent sales figures have shown Americans prefer any time gas prices fall below $4 per gallon, Detroit will need help marketing these small vehicles.

Outlaw cars? Don't give these rat bastard commies any ideas.

As GM's Bob Lutz put it not long ago, "Very few people will want to change what has been their 'nationality given' right to drive big and bigger if the price of gas is $1.50 or $2 or even $2.50. Those prices will put the CAFE-mandated manufacturers at war with their customers."

Which will lead to the demise of Gummint Motors and all of those UAW jobs. Speaking of the UAW, Gettelfinger sez he wants to sell his 55% stake in Chrysler. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Who does he think is dumb enough to buy it? Maybe the gummint will waste even more of our tax dollars by buying the UAW's 55% stake in Chrysler.

All solutions to this problem flow from Washington. One would be to give substantial tax subsidies to buyers.

Buy a crapmobile, get a tax break.

Another would be to impose a federal gas tax to jack up the price of gasoline to $4 per gallon and keep it there.

Which is prolly what will happen.

This is the solution that keeps Europeans driving small cars with tiny engines. High gasoline prices have become a political third rail in U.S. politics, and the Obama Administration insists it isn't interested in subsidies or taxes.

WTF? Of course they're interested in taxes. What do you think cap and trade is? It's a big ol' energy tax. Also, when we come out of the recession, if we do, demand for gas will go up and since the rat bastard commies Dimocrats are against new domestic or offshore drilling, the prices will once again rise to over $4 a gallon. And I can tell you exactly what Pelosi, Schumer and all of the other rat bastard commies will say when that happens: "Even if we drill now, the oil won't be available for another five years."

That's like the redneck who wouldn't fix his leaky roof because when it was raining he was afraid of working on a wet roof and when it wasn't raining the roof didn't leak.

We need to, as Sarah Palin said, "Drill baby, drill!" But the rat bastard commies are in charge so that won't happen.

That puts the burden back on the beleaguered auto makers. The Detroit Three already sell small cars at a loss to meet the current 27.5 mpg fleet average. The car companies may hope that if the whole industry is forced to move up the fuel-economy ladder, consumers will have no choice other than to buy these cars. But experience suggests companies that have specialized in making smaller cars, such as the Japanese-owned auto makers, are more likely to be able to sell them at a profit.

And since Gummint Motors will be run by the gummint and will essentially be a jobs program for the UAW to produce crapmobiles, that no one wants, at a loss, who cares? I wonder how long the voters will let this crap go on?

Mr. Obama said a lot yesterday about the promised benefits of all this for the environment but not much about return on investment for the auto sellers.

Return on investment? For building and selling crapmobiles? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Anyway, what does a rat bastard commie, who has never held a job in the private sector, know about return on investment. This is a guy who thought the P/E ratio was the profit/earnings ratio and not the price/earnings ratio.

These public goals notwithstanding, it still looks as if Ford, Chrysler and GM will be making cars they can't sell, or can't sell profitably.

Which will eventually put them out of business or have to be heavily subsidized by gummint. In other words, more money thrown down the rat hole of failing businesses.

That might not be a problem if you're now Gettelfinger Motors. But still-independent Ford has private shareholders and creditors to answer. While GM and Chrysler attempt to meet the new standards with taxpayer money, Ford will have to do so on its own.

Goodbye Ford. You're doomed as well.

The real carrot the Administration offered the industry yesterday was a detour from the nightmare of state-mandated standards. California has been seeking a waiver from the Administration to impose its own higher mileage standards, and a number of other states have followed suit. The Obama national proposal indeed offers the industry what he called "consistency."

As if California isn't fucking up enough. Hey California, in light of all you budget problems how is that $3 billion embryonic stem cell research going?

So yes, it is possible to see why this disparate group came together yesterday. The UAW may soon be the government's partner in ownership of GM and Chrysler, and it has a strong incentive not to bite the hand feeding it a huge equity stake in the car makers.

The UAW not biting the hand that feeds it? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! That'll be the day. And as I mentioned earlier, Gettelfinger wants to sell the UAW's stake in Chrysler and I'm sure he feels the same way about GM. As I also said earlier, good luck trying to find a buyer.

We wish these folks luck "working together" with the Obama auto-design team. One thing seems certain by 2016: Taxpayers will be paying Detroit to make the cars Americans don't want, and then they will pay again either through (trust us) a gas tax or with a purchase subsidy. Even the French must think we're nuts.

No you've got it all wrong. You forgot all about Poof! PFM!

What gripes me about this mpg shit is that my 12 year old Toyota station wagon gets 40 mpg. Why is it that the newer the car, the less efficient the gas mileage? Could it be because the oil and car companies hopped in bed together? And don't tell me it's because of all the environMENTAL stuff on them either. I don't buy that. I remember back in the 70s Tom Ogle http://fuel-efficient-vehicles.org/FEV-carb-Tom-Ogle-1977.
php built a carburetor that could get 100 mpg. But, GM bought the patent rights to it and then stuck it on a shelf in some warehouse long forgotten. Because saving the consumer money wasn't putting any in their pockets, greedy bastards. Even with fuel injection that is used now a days, every vehicle should get 100 mpg. Why should I spend 20K more for a cramped hybrid that only gives me 20 mpg more than my 12yo Toyota? Fuck 'em. I'll drive my '66 Mustang (global warming machine) and they can try to keep up. They'll have to catch me first and pry the keys out of my cold dead hands. BUAHAHAHAHAHAH!

Posted by: phthalo on May 21, 2009 03:27 PM

They can come get my 8-MPG V-10 4WD Excursion when they pry my cold dead hands offa its steering wheel...Kiss what I can't, Obama....(grin)

pthalo - Do you really think that if GM had the technology to build a car that got 100 MPG they would keep that technology on the shelf? If so, I would like to sell you the Brooklyn Bridge. Cheap. Only $200.

Posted by: Denny on May 21, 2009 04:14 PM

Denny, I really do. What other reason could there be? BTW, I already own the bridge. I'm in negotiations with some people from California. ;)

Why do you think they wouldn't hide it away? Not trying to be argumentative here, I'd really like to hear your views.

Posted by: phthalo on May 21, 2009 04:22 PM

pthalo - If they could manufacture a car that got 100 miles per gallon, they wouldn't be able to build them fast enough. Why do think Japanese cars started selling so well in the 70's? It was because Hondas and Toyotas got better gas mileage. Don't you think that GM would have used that technology back in the 70's to prevent Honda and Toyota from taking over a big share of the car market? If they had this technology, they wouldn't have to build little crapmobiles to try and get 40 mpg. They could build full size cars that got good gas mileage and wouldn't have to give a shit about any stinkin' CAFE standards. They could build the cars that Americans wanted that got fantastic gas mileage. Why would GM not utilize this technology if they had it? They sure wouldn't be turning into Gummint Motors. Here is what Snopes has to say about it.

You notice these conspiracy theories have been going on forever. An alternate version is that the oil companies bought the patent. If GM could build cars that got 100 mpg, they would be building them and they would be the number one producer of automobiles in the world and would not be going bankrupt. It's as simple as that.

Sierra Club, Environmental Defense Fund and the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Good lord, is *that* a triumvirate of socialist know-nothings....

Posted by: Grumpy Old Ham on May 21, 2009 08:19 PM

We could actually make some significant progress on fuel economy, if we'd collectively (read that as Congress/EPA) pull our head out of our ass when it comes to diesel fuel taxation and emissions policy. But noooo.... that's too simple for this bunch, with their infatuation with junk science and glowbull wormening.

I'm too lazy to look, but I'm sure this W&PFM magic bill is completely silent on the subject. You'd think that the way The One worships the euroweenies, he'd be in love with their passenger-car diesel standards.

Posted by: Grumpy Old Ham on May 21, 2009 08:24 PM

Oil IS running out. The only question is 'How fast?' More efficient vehicles will make it last longer and cost less. Yeah, they'll suck to drive. But it will beat walking. Eventually we'll invent something else to propel our cars - maybe synthetic diesel generated by algae - but it will take a long time and a lot of money to create the capacity to move us around the way we would like. Stretch out the oil.
Fringe benefit - it would decrease the power of the Arabs.

Posted by: Glenmore on May 21, 2009 08:28 PM

Glenmore......

Oil is running out?.......I suggest you turn off the lame stream media news presentations & do some research as to how much oil isin the western oil sands & shale, on our continental shelf`s & in Alaska. Hell, oil was first successfully drilled here in Pennsylvania & it is estimated 70%+ of the oil is still in the ground.

Then there is the 800 lb Gorilla.....the trillions upon trillions of cubic feet of natural gas which can be converted into oil.

Granted we need to do some work refining our method of drilling, recovering & refining but there is a supply which will last hundreds of years.

I somehow managed to forget our coal reserves which can be converted into oil & gas. I might be wrong but I believe Germans did this near the end of WW2 in order to supply the fuel to keep their war machinery working.

If there was really an impending shortage of oil.....Why not recognize this & maintain the neccessary demand on oil in the short term to keep our economy going& place a minimal tax ofsay 10 cents a gallon to generate the capital for reasearch& development to develop valid alternate primary fuel`s. By the way I do not mean ethanol, wind power or similar schemes which could never be viable sources to drive our economy.

Two last points to consider, oil does more then allow us to ride around in comfort....our entire plastics industry for one depends entirely on the oil industry to survive. Also ,if one researchs for truth, it becomes apparent that it is not a shortage of oil which drives the current environmental hysteria.....it is guilt for the success of our nation & attempts to transfer economic/industrial power to third world countries. It is no accident that the Kyoto Treaty our Senate voted down 100 to 0 excluded China & India from the restrictions which were to be placed on all western nations.

Posted by: dudley1 on May 21, 2009 10:15 PM

Actually dudley1 it was 97 to 0. Three senators were absent. And I agree, we are the Saudi Arabia of coal.

Posted by: Denny on May 21, 2009 10:20 PM

Denny....

You are correct , it was unanimous but several Senator`s were not in attendance.

Posted by: dudley1 on May 21, 2009 10:58 PM

I think the Obama administration is just playing political games here. I bet they know that PFM isn't going to happen. As Scotty says "I kenna change the laws of physics, cap'n".

But Obama gets good "mileage" out of the fact that he "mandated" 40 MPG fleets. It doesn't cost him anything, but when the auto manufacturers inevitably can't meet the mandate, Obama can castigate them further, for yet more political gain. The guy's a consummate politician, and zero percent statesman.

Hey Glen, your stupid is showing.

Posted by: fubar on May 22, 2009 10:26 AM

I'll never buy a product from a company owned by the UAW. They took over Colt after the company bought Holly Carburator and the quality went to pure shit. Had a .45 with a 17.5 lbs trigger pull that never could get all the way through a box of ammo without at least two jams.

Posted by: Ric on May 22, 2009 02:05 PM

If FoMoCo were to declare bankruptcy today, they could essentially toss the UAW out in its ear. Not in actuality, but the contract could be renegotiated without having the GM/ChryCo/UAW triumvirate at the negotiating table. They could get their costs down, and tell O'ma to pound sand.
I'm just sayin' it would give them a closer to level playing field. They, after all, still have all their debt (mortgaged everything they own), while GM/ChryCo are paying their loans @cents on the dollar, if at all.
Big thing: What is UAW going to do with their 55% ownership?
Sell.
That one word describes the UAW belief in the viability of Chrysler. Even when they OWN the company, they don't think they can make it work. Even when they are negotiating and working for themself, they can't or WON'T make it work.
Government Motors is a doomed make-work for UAW Dem voters. Gettelfinger should have been thrown out for trying to wring more gold from the goose. He should have known better, as he sat in on board meetings.
If we cannot vote for a year plus, we can at least vote with our dollars, and boycott the bailout duo.
