The US Government is supposed to be a lightweight framework to hold together the several states. The power goes to the states, and to the people. The people and the states get to choose their own style of government based on their regional needs and preferences. Not the one-size-fits-all, top-down, centrally-planned monstrosity that we've been drifting toward for the past 80 years.
We have all this nasty discourse because when the government starts taking sides, and handing out free stuff at other people's expense, the special interests line up around the block to influence government. And they fight tooth and nail to prevent the unsympathetic party from gaining power, because that wrecking ball swings both ways, baby. Neither party has a lock on inappropriately concentrating power in the federal government, although the Democrats do seem to do it faster than Republicans.
One definition of tyranny is special interests using the force of government to shove their agenda down your throat. Screw both political parties! I just want my liberty back!

To DanS: If you're so upset with the government because you've still got "gook metal" in your body, just remember it was your buddies the Democrats who got us into the Vietnam War, and they didn't even have an "exit strategy." Unfortunately, the Republicans also fought it as a political war instead of fighting it to win it.
But now a days, it is the Democrats who seem Hell-bent on keeping the United States from being able to defeat any foe. The Dems are the ones who are betraying our military!

Just the other day, one of the local aged hippies told me I shouldn't have even had to be there (he'd been with the 169th, I think) and I told him we all had to be somewhere. He just gave me a blank look. Guess he just bought into the old thing of all us vets are just victims. I AIN'T NO VICTIM, and I refuse to let the Lefties turn the kids who're serving now into "victims" who've "suffered" from what the evil politicians do.
MAN UP, Dan, and get over it. It's been too long (I earned my PH on Memorial Day in '68) and we all need to come to grips with what life was like 40 years ago and where we are now.

I never would disregard your service for this country........but I do think you miss the whole point of a conservative view regarding international political thinking.
The way I see & understand is we conservative`s want a Government which remains true to our Constitution, the Bill of right`s, maintain the strength of our armed forces & dispel any notion from our sworn enemies we are weak or will allow for the erosion of our or our allies freedoms & rights
I think the Rush`s , Hannity`s & others do a real service to this country bringing the Conservative message to the people. Their audience demonstrates this is what Americas wants to hear & it resonates well with them.
I think keeping our military strong & ready is the best defense to keep our country safe........When war is neccessary , I believe it is best to conduct it from a position of overwhelming force & bring it to a quick conclusion. I do not want anymore VietNam`s where politicians made the decisions, caused hundreds of thousands of death` with no clear battle plan in place or a defined end game.
On the other hand , all I see from the liberal left is Socialism,Defeatism, Accomodation, Destruction of the American Republic, our way of life & the rise of an elite liberal socialist class to control all aspects of our lives to where we will serve them.
My point is this ,you believe in this country,so do I , the difference is I believe as do most every commenter here you are giving support to those who would destroy all this country stands for from a misplaced sense of political belief or awareness. Under every Democratic administration who followed much of your thinking this country suffered enormous loss of power , prestige & required the next Republican administration to straighten out the mess created . On balance every Republican administration has been far better for this country then the Democratic regime it replaced.
It is my considered opinion........ The Obama group of Socialist`s is the most serious threat to the continued existence of a free America during my Adult life as it is their mission to destroy the America we were born & live in. You apparently do not feel or believe this to be the case. This is the reason for the importance of the Rush Limbaugh`s & Shawn Hannity`s......To keep the message & believe for a free,strong & conservative America alive as well keep bringing convert`s to the fold. I sincerely hope you get this message & join the Free American side of this issue.
