Cash For Clunkers

The $1 billion dollar cash for clunkers program that was supposed to last until October is already out of money. It only took a week to blow through the $1 billion. The people who came up with this are the same people who are saying that Obamacare will only cost $1 trillion over ten years. That sure gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling about Obamacare.

Another thing that bugs me about this stupid program is all the good used cars that will be taken off the roads, while a lot of the real clunkers, that are about all "the poor" can afford, are still out there.

In case you haven't seen this video, here's a perfectly good Volvo "clunker" being destroyed.

The procedure used is the oil is drained and replaced with a sodium silicate solution, and the engine is then started and run until the dehydrating solution causes engine internals to abrade and ultimately seize. The engine in this video lasts for quite a while before blowing.

This looks like a fun job. I've blown two engines in my life and I sure didn't get paid for it.

That don't look like no clunker to me! Let's head to the reservation, I'll show you some clunkers! Why wreck a prefectly good automobile when some poor sap is driving a bigger POS an hour each way to get to work. Wait....sorry, my bad, we are talking about a GOVERNMENT program here.

Not ONLY that what is the carbon footprint of recycling (killing ) all these vehicles as apposed to letting them die a natural death ?

The idea of "Cash for Clunkers" is we take perfectly good cars and trash them, so the economy will then improve as we build more cars. Brilliant! Who could question the wisdom of destroying your wealth in order to increase your wealth? We owe those 9/11 terrorists a big thank you for knocking down buildings and putting our builders to work! Maybe JHE will hire William Ayers to do more bombings. What the hell is wrong with these people? They should be in mental institutions!

Makes perfectly good sense to me! Take a car that if sold on the open market, lower income citizens may be able to afford, blow it up, and crush it! Now, the working poor have a smaller choice when it comes to purchasing an automobile within their means, and less used parts available to fix what they already have! Next year when the government shows us that the poor are worse off than they were (today), we can give them a larger taxpayer handout.

Don't forget about the upcoming federal bailout in response to the massive wave of automotive repossessions we'll soon hear about. FU52

As a guy that has been in the car business for 35 years, I can say that this is about the dumbest program I have ever seen. And I have seen some dumb ones.
There is a secondary car market, run by thousands of used car dealers across the country. Independant business people that hire a few people in every city in this country. These are the cars that they sell and traditionaly carry the loans for the folks that could never get a bank or credit union loan. They are all getting screwed. More lost jobs. More Bubba's and Leroy's that can't get a car to get to work if they could finf a job.

Weep tears of rage! I just took delivery of my 3rd Volvo. The previous two each clocked more than 150,000 miles, and each lasted about 12 years. They may have grown old, but they were good. Seems the U.S. administration did not give much thought to this program.
Then again, our Govt. (Australia) decided to stimulate the economy by gifting $900 to each taxpayer. And so some payments went to people who had recently died; some to people who had visited and worked here for 6 months, but had since returned to their own country; and those who earned an income but had tax credits received nought. We too, have a lazy/brain-dead administration. (Ours is called 'Labor', which is akin to Democrat).

That's something so truly stupid that only a government worker, or a liberal could come up with it.

"Broken Windows" effect indeed.

....ok....we've seen the abortion or euthanasia of a car (so to speak---take your choice)...now I want to see the real thing....where are the video clips of people being aborted or euthanized? Show me the clips of people laughing at an aborted human or laughing at grandma's prescribed demise. What? Why shudder at the logical conclusion? I want the truth raw and real and taken to its logical conclusion. I want the media, in whatever form, to bare it all....show us both sides of the coin.

This is freakin' criminal.
The thing that makes the world better now, as opposed to 100 years ago, is our "stuff". Once "stuff" is created, it doesn't have to be re-created for each new user.
Outside of Washington, this is called Progress.
These really are the dumbest fools that God put guts in.

Wait a minute! Isn't this money that could have been used to "bail out" the housing market? Oh, I forgot, the dot-gov has plenty of our money to spend, don't they?
Oh my goodness, who realized that all the lending generated by these sales will help the "evil" bankers that we've been told are responsible for all the world's problems?
Let me see, these cars are those that've all been sitting on the dealers' lots, or in the pipeline. Now the UAW guys can build more, except that it's hard to see where the demand will be created. Looks as though most of the folks who'd have bought cars in the next few months already shot their wads. Coud it be that about Xmas time there'll be another round of lay-offs at the car makers, due to un-sold inventory?
And what about those greedy insurance companies? Won't they be collecting bigger premiums on newer cars? State, county and local governments will be collecting more sales taxes and vehicle registration fees on these sales.
Tell me again how this is supposed to help the liittle guy, when we follow the money!
Too bad the politicians don't know anything about economics, huh?
I bet they wish they could repeal that pesky law of unintended consequences.

Poor thing-it sounded like it was screaming for its life...That is such an incredibly STUPID, ASININE waste of an otherwise perfectly good vehicle...

Posted by: Sandy G. on August 4, 2009 11:19 AM

I can't bear to watch it after reading the comments.

Posted by: PeggyU on August 4, 2009 12:04 PM

You know, we could just ship them to France.

I'm sure the "yutes" would be happy to take care of them for us.

Posted by: Unix-Jedi on August 4, 2009 12:30 PM

And after people have traded in their perfectly good cars for new ones and getting the Komrade Emperor's $4500.00 under the C4C program, I have to wonder how many of these people will have these new cars repossessed by the banks when they can't make the payments on them. Then they will not have a car at all.

Posted by: Scottiebill on August 4, 2009 01:55 PM

This was some sort of payoff to the UAW? Rots-O-Ruck. Drudge reports that of the top 5 models being bought through C4C, four are foreign. 1 Ford, 3 Toyota, 1 Honda. I think the Japanese cars are built here but, their factories are non-union. Heh.

Posted by: Baddog on August 5, 2009 02:06 AM

...totally freakin' stupid! Just like everything else these morons running our country(into the ground)are doing ...totally freakin' STUPID!!
...again in the immortal words of Ron White..."You can't fix stupid!"

Posted by: Tony K on August 5, 2009 08:09 AM

That hurt my soul to watch... that engine was crying!
What a senseless waste!

Posted by: RobC on August 5, 2009 01:29 PM

What a waste. Even if that vehicle had high mileage, it is still a Volvo which is a well made car with a high safety rating. Maybe some soccer mom could have used it to drive her kids around town. This program is such a waste of money and vehicles.

Posted by: evan on August 5, 2009 02:13 PM

That probably made some Volvo engineer both proud and sad at the same time. Why these folks don't understand liberty and freedom are what we're founded upon and will always strive for, is beyond me. I am sad for us, but I am well armed and I vote.

Posted by: anon in protest on August 7, 2009 12:38 AM

This makes me SICK. Like actually sick to see this waste.

I'm BROKE and a college student, and here we have an administration that talks about helping the poor and impoverished WASTING this kind of wealth....

I actually got sick seeing this.

My cars aren't even this nice! A WASTE.

Posted by: matt on August 7, 2009 10:51 AM

This is not a cash for clunker since this Volvo exceeds teh 18 MPG combined requirement listed on fueleconomy.gov, so it must be a joke
