That's heavy metal? I would never thought of that as being heavy metal.

First Def Leopard now Cream? What's next weeks Chicago?

Posted by: kerrcarto on November 22, 2009 09:58 AM

pdwalker - Cream were influences on many heavy metal bands. Ginger Baker was one of the first drummers to have two bass drums in his kit.

kerrcarto - No Chicago. Ever.

Yeah, it's not "metal" by today's standards but today's metal wouldn't be what it is today without the early "metal" influences of yesterday.

Just saying...

Excellent, metal or not. It's blues, actually. I would not have recognized Eric Clapton if I didn't hear him sing and play. He had so many "looks" over the years.

It's obvious the camera operators weren't musicians. I'd like to see those guys playing their instruments. They focus on Clapton's face while he sings, but when he launches into that now-famous guitar solo, they pan off somewhere else.

We have some of the most amazing drumming ever, and there's no footage of that. We get a little bass footage now and then, that's nice. Instead of playing with the zoom/focus, they should have concentrated on the performers and the performance. Idiots.

Good music and good performance though.

Ginger Baker is cool. :)

Hi all,

This idea of trying to date "Heavy Metal" is like trying to date a start and stop of Classical music.

I was born in 1951, and I would like to see any documentation of the term "Heavey Metal" in relation to Rock music the predates an off-shoot of "The National Lampoon" Magazine "Heavy Metal" which was first published in April of 1977.

Before the magazine and movie we refered to "Hard Rock" as "Hard Rock", "Psycodelic", or "Acid Rock".

"Cream" was about as Hard, Psyco, and Acid as you could get. Yeh, They're about as "Heavy Metal" as they come.

But please prove to me that "Heavy Metal" was called Heavy Metal befor the Magazine was published. I mean like 6 months before.

Hey Pete...

You're the only one here trying to date "Heavy Metal"...

No Chicago ? Too bad. I loved Terry Kath in 1969, he was on the same planet with Mike Bloomfield and Jerry Garcia.

CharlieDelta,

I'm sorry. I was only trying to date the term
"Heavy Metal".

I'll just keep quiet while the experts define what
is or isn't "Heavy Metal".

My bad Pete-
When I read your comment last night I was in a completely different zone (Sunday football, lots o' food and lots o' beer). To put it simply, I half-ass'd read your comment and jumped to my own little conclusion.

You've got a couple decades on me dude. I was skipped a bitchen generation of music, and am in no way an expert on that topic. My bad.

Cheers!

CharlieDelta,

I'll trade you my first issue, first edition
of "Heavy Metal" dated April 1977. for your couple of decades.

I'll even throw in a bottle of you favorite hooch.

Pete

PS, I sent Denny a pix of my collectors edition. Don't know if my amature attempt at Paint will work.
