GOC's Amazing Odyssey Part 1

It was a beautiful day in Snowmass Village. Blue sky. Sunscreen weather. My ski buddy, Scottish Tom, and I had made a few runs down the green slopes to get myself back into form. I was skiing too fast, but I always do. We broke for lunch.

After lunch, we were ready to hit it again.

One of the things I like about Snowmass is that we ski out of the hotel and down to the lift. That's what I was doing when the mishap occurred. I was only about 50 feet away from the ski school entrance to the lift line and was hardly moving. Along came a newbee doing his plow. He was also hardly moving. He was not skiing fast and out of control. He did manage to ski over the back of my ski. We got tangled up and I fell right on the side of my head. I have taken many falls a lot more spectacular than this one. The problem with this fall was that I hit square on rather than a moving fall where my head would have just hit a glancing blow. To the newbee's credit he did stop, apologize, and ask if I was OK and if he could do anything to help.

Yannow, I did think I was OK until Tom got me up and I started puking. Then, I knew sumpin' was wrong. Someone summoned the ski patrol and I was taken to the clinic. Right across from me in the clinic was a girl who had broken both her wrist and her collarbone. She was in a lot more pain than I was.

They decided that they better call the EMT's and ship me down to the Aspen hospital. I gotta hand it to the EMT's. They put in an IV in a moving vehicle and hit the vein on the first try. They then shot me full of dilaudid to stop the pain and gave me a zophran tablet to quell the nausea. Both worked. Better living through chemistry.

The nurse in the ER was a cute blonde with a nice case of south mouth. She sounded like South Georgia. I was close. She was from around Buford South Carolina.

The ER doc came in to see me and he said I might need a CT scan. He left the decision up to me. WTF? No doc, forget it. Release me and I'll go skiing tomorrow. Of course I wanted a CT scan. Was he nuts? Now the bad thing about having a brain scan is I'm afraid they'll find no brain there, just a little hamster on a spinning wheel.

Do any of you watch CSI or any of the shows that have coroners giving the cause of death? COD was a subdural hematoma caused by blunt force trauma. So that's what I had. Fortunately, it was not COD. I was alive and had enough dilaudid in me that I wasn't in much pain.

The neurosurgeon in Aspen was on vacation, so they choppered me down to St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction. The ER nurse was named Anna and she was a babe. I gotta admit that I've been blessed with some babelicious ER nurses. The one I had after I broke my back was a real babe as well.

By this time, Cindy had been notified, and called me in the ER. I let her talk to Anna who filled her in on what had been done so far. What did I know. My brain was scrambled and I was on some good drugs.

There was a fundraiser going on at the hospital and the neurosurgeon was there. I've never seen a doctor so well dressed. He admitted me. They took me to my room where I retired for the night.

Glad to see you're back in action Denny.

Enjoy the babes and modern chemistry.

'Member . . . E Z duzzit.

No need to go get all bullheaded and macho for us. We can wait.

Don't forget you babelicious nurse at blownstar. Glad to see that you are feeling better. Remember, slow and low..that is the tempo. Take it easy.

Posted by: kerrcarto on January 21, 2010 03:09 PM

Not to worry Ron. I still have a lot of the material you send me to post if I get tired. I'd just give you the keys but I'm afraid my readers would like your posts better than mine. e.g. Your Navy post.

Posted by: Denny on January 21, 2010 03:15 PM

Sorry to hear about your mishap. Hope you heal quickly and completely. Have to stop by more often if you are going to be exciting. :-)

Posted by: Paul B on January 21, 2010 03:15 PM

Sorry to hear about your accident, Denny. I haven't been to your site in a while (tryin' to find work ...), and it comes as a shock. But, I'm glad to hear that you're on the mend.

Posted by: ozemc on January 21, 2010 03:20 PM

Glad you are back and a speedy and full recovery Denny!

Denny: may not have included you in the li'l poem I wrote after Brown's win. Posted it at Sondra's in a comment thread, and here:

http://friendlytavern.blogspot.com/2010/01/moon-over-obama-by-dr-et.html

Here's the text:

The voters of Mass showed ol' Teddy their ass
As they mooned our Dear Leader last night.
Now Obama has heard, in a clear, single word
That the people are willing to fight

Against unbridled debt and tax laws not seen yet
And a health-care bill that now can't pass.
They gave him a Bronx cheer, a raspberry, a jeer,
Shoving "Hope & Change" right up his ass.

That echoing word that Obama heard
Was from liberals telling him "NO!"
A heavy put down to a posturing clown
Who thinks Marx would be quite apropos.

Now he'll go to school and learn from ridicule
That he needs to be less socialist,
Or the insults will peak in November's first week
And he'll find out the whole country's pissed.

Glad you didn't pull a Natasha Richardson on us, Denny. That was just a sad situation! Location, location, location!

Sorry to hear what happened, and glad to hear that you are feeling better! WELCOME BACK!

A day without 'Da Crip, is a day without Sunshine.

Welcome back, Big Guy.

Posted by: Bill on January 21, 2010 04:55 PM

Took a chance, hit my GOC bookmark and couldn't believe my eyes!!! Welcome back!! As you have read, you have been missed. Please thank Ryan for his wonderful updates.

As others have said above, please do not overdo it. Better to have you silent for a bit than forever.

Now I shall return to my lurking state!!!

Glad you're back, Denny. Sorry to hear about the accident, but sure glad the docs got you fixed up. Tale care!

Posted by: phthaloblu on January 21, 2010 06:29 PM

First day? That sucks. I was worried that it was some spectacular crash with other broken bones, blood, stitches and thought your ski would be trashed, sounds like it is probably okay.

Looks like you took care of your annual deductible and out of pocket maximum by about 3pm that day. In your dilaudid haze, did you happen to tell any of those hot nurses about your blog? If so, Hi nurse-babes, thanks for taking care of our Denny.

Posted by: Harper on January 21, 2010 06:33 PM

Glad you're back sweetie! Now get some rest.

Posted by: becky on January 21, 2010 06:35 PM

Hell with Hi to the Nurses...any of them BOOBAGE candidates>>?????????

Posted by: tyGuy/Neil on January 21, 2010 06:47 PM

Got any Dilaudid you can spare? But if you're really hurting, ask them for some Fentenyl.

Posted by: Ralph Gizzip on January 21, 2010 06:52 PM

Strewth Denny, it is nearly enough to make a grown man cry! Nice to see you back on deck, and your humour is the same (or better). (Was it "The Flash" that developed super powers after a mis-hap in his laboratory? Can a similar thing happen on the ski-slopes)?
I will take the long-term view that a full recovery is more important than a short term rant, but progress is looking good.

Posted by: Thomas the Tout on January 21, 2010 06:52 PM

It hasn't been the same without you! Gotta get our our fix of "The Grouch". You didn't miss much.....oh yeah, there's a Republican in Ol'Teddy's seat and Nancy's goin' down. Besides that no changes.

Posted by: Christopher on January 21, 2010 07:28 PM

Well you old lech your back I see(thank god my days have been kind of boring). Sounds like regardless of the incident you had a grand tour of Colorado and its finer ER's. Lets say we don't do this again, as it causes undo stress on all of us!!

Posted by: dancingbear1564 on January 21, 2010 07:35 PM

Good to see that you're back. Good to see that the hamster in your head is still running on the wheel....

Posted by: Old Wierd Ward on January 21, 2010 07:56 PM

Ralph - I've had fentenyl. Dilaudid is better. Demoral is even better.

Posted by: Denny on January 21, 2010 07:59 PM

Denny - my S-I-L caught an edge and took a full-on header on a snowboard at Steamboat this past April. He was near the lift and barely moving, too. I watched him go down as I was waiting for him. He didn't move; after about a minute I and others reached him. The ski patrol took him down the mountain and off to the hospital. Scary time. He was occasionally disoriented and slow of thought for months afterward. Pay heed to your body and get well soon.

Posted by: KathyP on January 21, 2010 08:22 PM

Welcome back, Denny. Glad to see your memory is still working, and especially glad you got the good-lookin' nurses you deserved. Just don't rush things, you've still got a couple of days to rest before time to post Saturday B(.)(.)bage.

Posted by: Inbredredneck on January 21, 2010 08:32 PM

Great to read you. This is the most entertaining story of a REALLY BAD accident I ever read. We can always count on you not to complain, to minimize your pain and discomfort, and to say one good word about your caretakers, and even about the fellow who caused you to stumble and hit your head. I always said that you were not a Grouchy Old Cripple. You don't fit the pattern of those 3 words, at all. All the best. God bless!

Posted by: Claudia on January 21, 2010 08:39 PM

So glad you're back with us, Denny. Keeping you in prayer, and glad you're feeling better.
Continue to take the time you need to do so!

Posted by: Mo K. on January 21, 2010 09:19 PM

BTW, Denny, I don't watch CSI, but I'm an RN. I had patients who didn't make it with what you had. And some who recovered very slowly. You're lucky you're not COD. You're lucky you can still type. Please, take it easy and relax. Just enjoy life, for a while. Forget about rants, puns, AOTW, music and Saturday Boobages (YES! guys!). This is good advice from your oldest fan and friend.

Posted by: Claudia on January 21, 2010 10:03 PM

Is it stupid that I'm sitting here grinning at this post cuz I can tell that you're on the mend and getting back to being yourself? And is it even more stupid that I'm so glad you're doing better and getting back to being yourself that I'm tearing up? Must be PMS.

It's great to hear from you; you've been missed. Take it easy and keep healing. As I've said before, your health is more important than amusing us. You've survived - so will we.

Posted by: Blondie on January 21, 2010 10:59 PM

Welcome back - we MISSED you! So good to read your posts! Take care of yourself please!

Posted by: Mary on January 21, 2010 11:44 PM

Glad you got some good EMT/Paramedics. When the eye balls look like a stuck coo coo clock you need them.
Old EMT

Posted by: Scrapiron on January 21, 2010 11:44 PM

Glad you didn't have to use any more of the medical facilities than you did.

But take lots of care. Head injuries have a nasty habit of popping back up long after you think you're ok!

Posted by: Poker Player on January 22, 2010 12:28 AM

Hot damn!! I just stopped by to see if Ryan left any updates. This is absolutely the best news this week. Senator Brown in, Air America gone, Obamacare DOA, NY Times critisizing Obama, Fox News had its best day ever, SCOTUS kills McCain-Feingold is all good, but Denny is up and typing is critical. For my whole life, I have had some serious doubts, but maybe there really is a God.

Posted by: Chuck from Tacoma on January 22, 2010 02:35 AM

As an old EMT, I'm glad that they caught it early. The old brain is something you don't play around with.

Take it easy, don't worry if recovery seems to you to be too slow (it's not), and you'll be back to fighting trim soon.

Welcome back, Denny - but, you know, there are easier ways to score drugs and meet babes!

Don't over do it - rest, rehab and recover - so glad to read that you're on the way back.

The Juju Woman and I have been thinking of you...Good thoughts...

When I was first learning to ski I wiped out a mom and her two kids. Fortunately, no one was injured, and I learned an important lesson.

I don't ski anymore...too much Moo Duk Kwan. If I do my left knee again...I've got to go the titanium replacement route. I like my knee more than skiing and flying spinning heel kicks.

Get well man, oh, and by the way...I've got a great bumper sticker for your chair. I'll give it to you the next time I see you.

I'll tell you what...the Juju Woman and I went to Iceland and did the sled dog thing...way too cool...so, let me know when you want to go...you could do it, no problem. We'll spend a couple of days in Boston doing the Freedom Trail (pub crawl), and then fly up to Iceland. I'm serious.

Get well my friend, and Cool Runnings.

Posted by: Yabu on January 22, 2010 09:58 AM

That was too close Denny. The small, insignificant things can sure bite you. I am glad you are on the mend, and sounding like the GOC we all know and love.

Posted by: True Blue Sam on January 22, 2010 10:05 AM

I used to like you Claudia....but No Boobage???
Denny needs to rest????

What better to Clear the old Brain Scab than a Great Pair!!!!!

SO Denny do all the resting from the Rants, AOTW, and ESPECIALLY the Puns
'BUT BRING ON THE BOOBAGE!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: tyGuy/Neil on January 22, 2010 10:14 AM

It's great to "see" your voice again. We really missed you.

Posted by: Paul on January 22, 2010 10:39 AM

Glad yer feeling better, Denny.
If you give me a heads up I might even put on a dress for you if you come to my ER.

Damn scary thing to think of, but anything for you!

Posted by: GrumpyUnk on January 22, 2010 11:48 AM

Heal up, my friend. I'm having withdrawal pains due to lack of your posts!

What everyone else said, plus I hope you are much better by Sat.

Pleased you're OK and back, man.
Enjoy reading your stuff, and as an avid skier, was worried.
Dangerous sport.
Been a great week for the forces of light, truth and justice.

Keep on the mend Denny.........

I'm glad you're okay, Denny. You need to stay around to see Obama crushed in the next elections! I hope his opponent comes out of nowhere and snatches victory. I hope he's a one-termer just like Jimmy Carter.

By the way, your accident is an explanation as to why I don't do anything that involves abnormal risk factors and/or serious injury. Sure, I'll drive to work and back, but I have to do that. I do not, however, have to go skiing, para-sailing, base jumping, scuba diving, flying, etc. People tell I'm paranoid, but they don't know what it's like to have bad luck--I mean REAL bad luck. The kind that blots all the sun out of your life. No, I'll stay home and read, thank you.

Take care, Denny.
