A New Right

Well our superiors on the left have told is of all the rights we have in this country. Yannow like a right to have housing. That's why we have HUD.

A right to food. That's why we have food stamps and free breakfast and lunch for poor (and not so poor) children in our gummint schools.

A right to health care. Yep! The libs have told us that it's a right. It's in the Constitution or sumpin'.

Don't forget abortion on demand. It's in there somewhere as well.

Guess what the newest right is? Give up? It's the right to a cell phone. I kid you not. Not all states are participating yet, but I'm proud to say that Georgia is. Yay! More goodies for the poor. (Got the link from Dave in Mexifornia.)

From the site.

SafeLink Wireless is a government supported program that provides a free cell phone and airtime each month for income-eligible customers.

How to qualify.

1. You already participate in other State or Federal assistance program such as Federal Public Housing Assistance, Food Stamps and Medicaid.
OR
2. Your total household income is at or below of the poverty guidelines set by your State and/or the Federal Government.
AND
3. No one in your household currently receives Lifeline Service through another phone carrier.
4. You have a valid United States Postal Address. In order for us to ship you your free phone you must live at a residence that can receive mail from the US Post Office. Sorry, but P.O. Boxes cannot be accepted.

Wait a minute! What about the homeless? Don't they have a right to a free cell phone? I guess they better get with HUD and get some free housing. Then they can get their gummint supplied cell phone.

It's a right, yannow.

I believe "Under the Fifth Street bridge", has been a valid address here in Parkersburg for some time.

Next thing you know they will say that high speed internet is a right too. Oh wait.

Just wait until the clowns in Washington hear about this.

Well, that explains the cell phones each and every family member had in line at the grocery store yesterday who paid for their groceries with food stamps. Groceries included sub sandwiches, pizzas, pop, etc. I followed them outside and saw them driving off in a shiny new Mercedes. Must be nice to be poor.

Oddly, this program started under Reagan and isn't tax payer supported. Don't get me wrong. I agree with you that there is not a constitutional right to a cell phone, and it is very annoying that this program exists, but, as the website says, this ain't no "Obama phone."

Now, I don't want to pay the monthly fee that gets added to my phone bill every month and don't think there is any reason that this program still exists, but apparently this isnt new.

I don't have the desire or energy to see if this is something Tip O'Neil forced on Reagan (which I imagine it is) or even if that website is correct about the details, but thought I would add that link to this discussion!
